Crossing the Rotstock on the Eiger | A spectacular scrambling tour with a mountain guide

We’ll meet at 08:35 at the Grindelwald Terminal. From there, we’ll take the cable car up to the Eiger Glacier.

The starting point for our tour is the Eigergletscher station, which we can reach easily by train. We begin by following the footpath briefly towards Rotstock, then cross a gently ascending scree slope beneath the imposing face. The short, approximately 30-minute approach takes us straight to the foot of the West Ridge.

Right from the start, the route takes you straight into the characteristic limestone rock. We follow the line of the west ridge upwards on a varied and enjoyable climb. The route is mostly graded II to III and offers an enjoyable climbing experience.

This section requires a bit more concentration and physical effort for a short while: a compact rock step demands strength and stamina, but if you prefer, you can tackle this section quite easily and without any stress using slings – and our mountain guide will, of course, be there to help you.

The higher we climb, the more breathtaking the views down towards Grindelwald and the vistas of the neighbouring four-thousand-metre peaks become. After a good three to four hours of varied ridge and rock climbing, we finally find ourselves on the surprisingly flat plateau of the Rotstock (2,663 m). A fantastic spot to savour the adventure we’ve just completed to the full, with the mighty Eiger North Face before us, before the roughly one-hour descent via the blue-and-white-marked hiking trail and a few scree sections back to the Eiger Glacier.
