Multi-pitch climbing route on the Teufelstalwand | In the spirit of friendship
Solid granite, varied climbing and spectacular views down into the depths make «Im Zeichen der Freundschaft» one of Switzerland’s great multi-pitch classics.
The imposing Teufelstalwand rises above the Schöllenen Gorge. It is one of the most impressive granite walls in Central Switzerland. Despite its rugged appearance, it is home to “Im Zeichen der Freundschaft”, a well-secured multi-pitch route which, since its refurbishment, has become one of Switzerland’s most popular pleasure routes. The climb delights with its variety. Grippy cracks, elegant dihedrals, beautiful piazzo sections and varied wall climbing alternate repeatedly over ten pitches. The rough Uri granite offers excellent grip and ensures an exciting climbing experience. The approach and descent also lend the route its special character. Even the approach via the abseil slope into the gorge makes it clear that a genuine alpine adventure awaits us. After the final pitch, we leave the face via the high plateau and once again enjoy impressive views of the Schöllenen Gorge, the Salbitschijen and the Uri Alps.
Procedure and meeting place
We’ll meet at Andermatt railway station. From there, we’ll travel together in the mountain guide’s car to the starting point.
We reach the abseil point via a well-maintained mountain path. After several abseils, we arrive in the impressive gorge below the face and ascend via the marked approach path to the start of the route. This section alone makes the tour a special alpine experience.
The ten pitches offer varied granite climbing featuring cracks, dihedrals and slabs. The difficulty ranges from 5c, 6a to 6b. Well-coached and belayed by the mountain guide. Time and again, spectacular views down into the Schöllenen Gorge open up.
After finishing the climb, we follow the marked route back across the high plateau and descend back to the starting point. Together, we round off the day’s climbing in Andermatt.
