The Weissmies is a stunning 4,000-metre peak high above the Saas Valley. The traverse is a fantastic high-altitude hike that has it all: an easy rocky ridge, an impressive glacier and a majestic summit. The Kleine Furgenbahn makes the ascent easier for us, and the Saas Bahnen make the descent easier. On the first day, we ascend to the Almagellerhütte, enjoy lunch and can spend the afternoon doing a bit of climbing in our mountaineering boots on the beautiful granite. Depending on the conditions, we’ll decide as a group whether to tackle the South Ridge – which offers one of the most beautiful sunrises – or the slightly more challenging Rot Ridge. We’ll experience fantastic climbs at difficulty grades II and III and enjoy an impressive firn ridge on the Weissmies. The descent takes us across the imposing glacier down to Hohsaas, where we can raise a glass to our shared adventure before taking the cable car back down to the valley in comfort.
Procedure and meeting place
We meet immediately after the bus arrives at 10.15 in Saas Almagell.
We take the rustic Furgen cable car and enjoy the varied panoramic trail and hut approach. Once we arrive at the Almagellerhütte, we can fortify ourselves and look forward to and prepare for tomorrow's tour. We can also do some climbing and scrambling in our mountain boots in the nearby Dri Horlini. Overnight stay in the Almagellerhütte.
Today’s plan is to cross the mountain. We set off whilst it’s still dark so we can witness the magnificent sunrise at the Zwischenbergen Pass. From here, the route continues for a while off the beaten track until we reach the start of the south ridge of the Weissmies. We reach the beautiful and easy boulder ridge, the actual south ridge of the Weissmies. On the secondary summit, we put on our crampons and climb up the firn ridge to the main summit. Here we enjoy the magnificent view of the many 4,000-metre peaks of the Valais. The descent takes us across the impressive glacier to the Hohsaas cable car, where we can raise a glass to celebrate the tour. Afterwards, we take a leisurely ride down to the valley on the cable cars.
We finish the tour at around 3.00 pm in Saas Grund and head home with memories of a wonderful summit experience.
Requirements
- You have first experience on high tours.
- You have first experience with ice axe and crampons.
- Condition for high altitude tours with around 1000hm ascent and descent at a comfortable pace (~300hm/h).

Bergschaft tours and courses are conducted in German as standard. However, our mountain guides speak good English, as do many of the participants. If you speak English, you are of course very welcome. Depending on the tour, it may be worth asking us in advance whether the guide and the group are comfortable speaking English.

The Almagellerhütte (2,894 m, SAC Niesen section) is located on the south side of the Weissmies and is a popular starting point for high-alpine tours in the Saas Valley.
