Basic multi-pitch course | Climbing weekend with application tours

During the two days, we will teach you everything you need to know about multi-pitch climbing so that you can climb simple multi-pitches independently and safely on your own after the course or deepen and expand your knowledge in a more advanced course with us. Fun and climbing are never neglected!

Do you finally want to venture from the climbing garden into the longer tours and not be back on the ground after just one pitch, but instead get through pitch after pitch? On these two days we will climb on super rock and learn a few tips and tricks along the way. We will learn the basic techniques of multi-pitch climbing or refresh them and have enough time to go into more advanced techniques, tips and tricks. We put what we have learnt into practice straight away and go on a suitable multi-pitch route. You will learn a lot on these training and application days and, if you wish, also lead climb yourself and gain confidence in the equipment and technique.

  • Procedure and course content

    On these two days we will climb on beautiful rock and learn lots of valuable tips and tricks for multi-pitch climbing.

    • Day 1 - Welcome and getting to know each other

      We get to know each other and clarify your expectations.

      We start the course and explain the exact procedure and go into detail about the course content. On the first day, we will learn a lot of new things and take the time to deliberately repeat the topics several times to create confidence.

      Daily destination: You will have learnt important basics for multi-pitch climbing and gain confidence in its use.

      Rope team communication on an MSL route

      • Which commands do we use to communicate with each other
      • Communication via rope - rope commands

      Stand construction

      • Series connection
      • Equalising anchorage

      Save in MSL

      • Belaying from the body or from the belay station. When does which method make sense and how do we use it correctly?
      • Rope handling at the stand
      • Half-rope technique

      Abseiling

      • Set up abseiling
        •  Threading
        • Abseiling knots
      • 3 point check

      Planning 3×3

      • Which factors of the 3×3 planning pattern are particularly important
      • How to plan an MSL route, route planning with a climbing guide or app

    • Day 1 Evening

      We spend the evening either in the booked accommodation and enjoy dinner together and reflect on the day. Together we plan the tour for the next day

      The tour from 16-17 August is planned without an overnight stay. At the end of the first day, we will have a short reflection session and plan the tour for the next day together.

    • Day 2 - Learning and applying

      On the second day we build on what we have learnt, deepen the new techniques and apply them.

      Daily destination: You have acquired the knowledge and skills to climb multi-pitch routes independently. You are aware of where your strengths lie and where you still need to gain experience.

      Short MSL route independent climbing

      • Gain your first experience in an application tour, independent climbing of a multi-pitch route accompanied by our mountain guides.

    • Day 2 - Conclusion

  • Venues

    Course location Eastern Switzerland:
    Meeting place:
    Will be announced a few days before the course.
    The courses in Eastern Switzerland are planned in the Rhine Valley, Toggenburg or the Chur region. We remain flexible, if necessary adapting the venue to the prevailing weather conditions.

    Accommodation:
    We will spend the night at the Schwendihaus hostel in Amden. Breakfast is included, dinner will be in a restaurant in Amden.

    Climbing areas:
    We use the chairlift in the Amden ski area to climb the first few metres to the climbing areas. From the mountain station, it's about a 45-minute walk to the climbing areas. To get back down to the valley, we use the hire scooters and can enjoy a rapid descent with a unique view towards Amden village.

  • Requirements

    • You are proficient in belaying and lead climbing.
    • The correct handling of the threading on the redirector is no problem for you.
    • You can climb up to the 4th grade.
    • Condition for climbing tours with a comfortable ascent and descent.
  • Price and performance

    • CHF 450.-
    • Small group with 4 - 6 guests per mountain guide.
    • Including planning and realisation with mountain guide and his/her travel expenses.
    • Excluding travel costs, any train tickets, personal consumption.

Information on endurance and technique

Here you will find the organisation of our tours as a guideline. If you are unsure which level suits you best, feel free to get in touch - We can help you!

Technics

Technology 1 - for beginners

Easy tours, suitable for beginners. The terrain is easy and moderate. No previous mountaineering experience is necessary.

Climbing: No previous experience necessary. Experience in the climbing hall is an advantage.

Technique 2 - Leisurely tours

Easy to slightly challenging tours with short, steeper sections that we master together and with coaching. You are ready for this level after a basic or taster course.

Climbing: You have mastered the The basics of climbing in the gym and in the climbing garden.

Technique 3 - Medium tours

Medium-difficulty tours with short, technical sections that are easy to do with some previous experience. You have already done a few tours and feel confident with your equipment and technique.

Climbing: You know your way around a climbing garden and have some experience with multi-pitch routes.

Technique 4 - First big tours

Challenging tours with longer, steeper passages that require a good level of experience and skill. We secure these sections with ropes and coach you through difficult sections. Suitable for adventure-seekers with solid basic training.

Climbing: You have experience in multi-pitch climbing and feel confident in the climbing garden.

Technique 5 - Grand tours

Very demanding tours, with technical passages that require a good level of experience and skill. These are secured, but smooth, rapid progress is required. For experienced climbers with plenty of experience and a thirst for adventure.

Climbing: You are experienced in multi-pitch climbing and feel equally comfortable on alpine rock and in the climbing garden.

Endurance

Endurance 1 - Easy tours

Easy tours with plenty of time to take a break and enjoy.

  • Elevation gain: approx. 500 - 800 metres per day, 
  • Pace: approx. 250 - 300 m / h.
Endurance 2 - Leisurely tours

"Normal" tour at a leisurely pace with 800 - 1000 vertical metres per day, ~300 hm / h.

Endurance 3 - Medium tours

Longer tours at a steady, fluid pace. A solid basic level of fitness is required here.

  • Elevation gain: approx. 1200 metres per day
  • Pace: approx. 350 m / h.
Endurance 4 - First big tours

Long and challenging tours at a brisk but constant pace. Ideal for active sports enthusiasts.

  • Elevation gain: up to 1500 metres per day
  • Pace: approx. 350 m / h.
Endurance 5 - Long tours

Very long tours with more than 1500 metres in altitude per day. Requires very good fitness and stamina.

  • Elevation metres: 1500 m + per day
  • Pace: approx. 400 m / h.
