Climbing trip to Finale Ligure | Coaching, sport climbing and a technical week with a mountain guide

You should have experience of outdoor rock climbing and be proficient at belaying a lead climber. A level of difficulty ranging from grade 5 to 6 (approx. 5b/5c) is ideal. As Finale Ligure offers over 4,000 routes, there is plenty of choice for every level of ability.

The limestone at Finale is world-famous for its incredible hole climbing („Buche“), driphole formations and water grooves. The climbing is very varied, technically challenging and requires good footwork on slabs as well as stamina on steeper sections of the wall.

This climbing area in Liguria is ideal all year round, but is particularly suitable in spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Even on sunny winter’s days, you can climb the south-facing rocks in just a T-shirt.

Getting there is straightforward – you can travel by carpool from Switzerland or make your own way; it’s also possible to travel by train. We’ll be staying in cosy accommodation near Finale Ligure or Finalborge, the historic climbing mecca with its charming narrow streets, outdoor shops and restaurants.

You’ll need your own climbing gear (harness, helmet, climbing shoes, belay device) as well as comfortable approach shoes. We’ll be climbing at the indoor climbing centre.

Our trips are far more than just guiding. Our mountain guides analyse your movement patterns right on the rock and give you personalised feedback on your climbing technique. We focus specifically on your weak points – whether it’s precision in your footwork, endurance climbing or pacing yourself on long routes.

The limestone cliffs around Finale are famous for their hole climbing. We’ll show you how to apply pressure to these holds in a way that’s gentle on your fingers, how to conserve energy by twisting your body and using your hips, and how to shift your centre of gravity optimally onto your feet on steep, pitted sections of the wall.

Thanks to the small group size, we can tailor our approach to your individual needs. Whether you’re comfortably climbing Grade 5 or working on your first 7a, we’ll set you specific movement exercises on the route, analyse your technique at key sections and help you make your movements more fluid.

Yes, technique and mindset go hand in hand. We’ll teach you tactics for route reading (“on-sight climbing”), recognising genuine resting positions (rests) and clipping quickdraws in a way that conserves energy. If you wish, we’ll incorporate specific exercises for dynamic belaying and controlled fall training on the rock, to help you clear your mind for difficult moves, and we’ll equip you with mental techniques you can use if you’re afraid of falling.

The day is structured in a balanced way: we usually start with a brief technical session or a targeted warm-up routine at the foot of the crag. On the first few routes, the focus is entirely on learning the movements and receiving feedback from the mountain guide. In the afternoon, there’s plenty of time to apply what you’ve learnt at your own pace in a relaxed atmosphere, to try out the routes you’d like to climb, or simply to climb without any technical guidance.
