The high-altitude touring course around and on the Weissmies is the ideal introduction to the magnificent world of the 4000 metre peaks near Saas-Almagell. These three days are all about learning and applying the basics of alpine touring and experiencing real mountain moments. With a lot of empathy and modern didactics, we teach the alpine craft in a practical way and at eye level. Thanks to the Hohsaas mountain railway, we can easily reach the area and spend the night in the lovingly managed Weissmieshütte - the perfect starting point for training and tours. On the first day, the programme focuses on basic rock climbing techniques - the terrain around the hut offers ideal conditions for practising and consolidating. The second day is dedicated to ice training: the knowledge is put into practice directly while walking with crampons and on a tour across the imposing glacier towards Weissmies. On the last day, another beautiful tour follows - suitable for the group, in order to deepen the content, gain confidence and further consolidate what has been learnt. The return journey is made pleasantly easier by the mountain railway.
Procedure and course content
We’ll meet at 09.48 at the bus stop at Saas Grund, Bergbahnen. We’ll make the ascent into the high-alpine terrain easier by taking the Hohsaas cable cars.
We get to know each other and take the cable cars to the edge of the glacier. Here we learn everything there is to know about the glacier. We then descend to the Weissmieshütte and plan the tour for the next day.

- Topic crevasses and behaviour on the glacier

Today we’ve got plenty of time again to train and learn a lot. We’ll also be going on a leisurely practical excursion and climbing a lovely peak.
Daily destination: Rock training and preparation Weissmies
Course content:
- Moving in the rock
- Belaying on the rock with a short rope
- Abseiling on high tours
- Summit experience & the joy of mountaineering
Theory (evening)Tour planning Weissmies
- 3×3: Conditions, terrain and people
- Tour planning for the next day
The grand finale is the climb up the Weissmies. On this climb, we’ll put everything we’ve learnt into practice and reach a magnificent summit – or a secondary summit, if necessary. Thanks to the Hohsaas cable cars, the descent is shorter and more pleasant.

- Short inputs and tips from the mountain guide
We’ll round off the days together again in Saas Grund.
Requirements
- No previous experience is necessary.
- Experience in hiking and walking in pathless terrain is an advantage.
- Condition for high altitude tours with around 1000hm ascent and descent at a comfortable pace (~300hm/h).

- CHF 875.-
- Small group with 4 - 6 guests per mountain guide.
- Including accommodation costs with half board

Bergschaft tours and courses are conducted in German as standard. However, our mountain guides speak good English, as do many of the participants. If you speak English, you are of course very welcome. Depending on the tour, it may be worth asking us in advance whether the guide and the group are comfortable speaking English.
