High Altitude Tour | Mönch and Jungfrau with Mountain Guide
High altitude tour on the divide between green lowlands and white, glaciated high mountains.
Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau - the triumvirate of the Bernese Alps. Hardly anywhere else do the four-thousand-metre peaks rise so abruptly from the green foothills of the Alps as here. Together we tackle two of these legendary peaks: the Mönch and the Jungfrau. Thanks to the Jungfrau cable car, we quickly reach the high alpine area and dive straight into a world of ice, rock and firn. The Mönch is a classic high-altitude tour: rock scrambling combined with a narrow, elegant firn ridge to the summit - an impressive line. We spend the night at the Mönchsjochhütte, surrounded by the glacier world. The next morning we set off early for Jungfrau. The tour leads across the glacier and through combined rock and snow terrain. Technically, it is comparable to the Mönch, but a little longer, more demanding in terms of fitness and with magnificent scenery. Two big peaks, two varied days - right in the heart of the Alps.
Procedure and content
We will meet at the Grindelwald Terminal and, after checking our equipment and getting to know each other, we will travel on the first cable car towards Jungfraujoch.
Once at the top of the Jungfraujoch, we make our way through the tunnels and shortly afterwards find ourselves on the Aletsch Glacier. From here we follow the track to the start at the foot of the Mönch, our destination for today. The tour begins with easy scrambling (II) before we reach the shoulder. The terrain changes there. Now a narrow firn ridge leads us in an elegant line to the main summit. Concentration and balance are required and are rewarded with a unique experience at lofty heights. After a short break on the summit, we climb back, accompanied by the vastness of the glacier panorama. After this impressive tour, the Mönchsjochhütte awaits us, nestled in the high alpine glacier world. Here we recharge our batteries for the next day and the ascent of the Jungfrau.
We set off at dawn in the light of our headlamps towards Jungfrau. The track stretches across the glacier. The ascent to the Rottalsattel becomes increasingly steep. We pass crevasses and impressive icefalls - the high alpine terrain shows its powerful side. A firn ridge leads us over the last steeper passage up to the summit of the Jungfrau, our second four-thousander in two days. After a break at the summit, we descend via the same route and return to the Jungfraujochbahn cable car with many impressions.
We take the railway back and finish the tour together in Grindelwald.

Questions and answers about the high altitude tours on the Mönch and the Jungfrau ?¿
How long does the tour on the Mönch take?
The ascent to the Mönch takes about 3-4 hours to cover the 600m. The descent takes about half as long.
How long is the tour on the Jungfrau?
The tour on the Jungfrau takes about 5h, 850hm. The descent takes about half as long.
What is the level of difficulty of the tour on the Mönch?
The tour on the Mönch is rated quite difficult minus (ZS-). There are a few scrambles around the 2nd degree and the summit ridge in the firn of the Mönch is also very narrow and exposed.
What is the level of difficulty of the tour on the Jungfrau?
The tour on the Jungfrau is rated quite difficult minus (ZS-). At the beginning there are a few scrambles in the 2nd degree and then the firn ridge runs in a pleasant steepness to the shoulder. From the shoulder it is a bit more exposed up to the summit. This part is secured with iron bars. Depending on the conditions, the descent can lead over the glacier flank. Sometimes you have to abseil down the large crevasses.
What equipment do I need for the tours on Mönch and Jungfrau?
For the tours on the Mönch and the Jungfrau you need the normal high alpine touring equipment. This includes crampons, ice axe, helmet and climbing harness. We have for you a detailed packing list with packing tips compiled.
What are the tours on Mönch and Jungfrau like and what are the dangers?
The two tours on Mönch and Jungfrau lead across large glaciers with quite a few crevasses. Our mountain guides constantly exchange information and know the best routes through the crevasse labyrinths. In addition, there are scrambling spots on both tours. These can be secured with the mountain rope. The summit ridge of the Mönch and the summit flank of the Jungfrau are both quite exposed. Thanks to the calm, empathetic manner of our mountain guides, you can also manage these stages well.
What is the accommodation like on the tour?
The Mönchsjochhütte is located just below the Mönch. A rustic mountain hut in the middle of the gigantic glacier world. The hut is equipped like a typical mountain hut with good half board and multi-bed rooms. There is no shower but running water in the toilets.
How do I need to acclimatise and what do I need to bear in mind?
The trip with the Jungfraujochbahn involves a rapid ascent in altitude to around 3500m.a.s.l.. It is possible to do these tours without acclimatisation, but fatigue, reduced fitness and headaches are often involved. It is better if you can spend the night before in Grindelwald. Ideally, you should go on a leisurely hike the weekend before or spend the night at altitude, for example on one of the Swiss passes.
What alternative routes are available on the Mönch?
In addition to the normal route via the south arm of the east ridge, there are:
- The South-west ridge on the MönchA great traverse with a bit more climbing and scrambling.
- The North face route over the "Nollen", a nose of ice. An easier north face route with gigantic low views and lots of firn and ice.
- For the good alpinists there is still the North face route "Lauper" with a famous shoulder stand. This tour is much more demanding and leads across ice and rock couloirs across the north face.
What alternative routes are there to the Jungfrau?
Two very cool alternatives to the normal route on the Jungfrau are the two ascents from the Lauterbrunnen valley, directly up from Stechelberg. Two long tours each, but both terrific:
- The Inner Rottal Ridge via the Rottal Hut is somewhat less demanding than the Rotbrättgrat, but just as varied and challenging.
- The Rottbrättgrat over the Silberhorn and the connecting ridge over the Silberlicka is a long tour, with many firn, ice and rock passages.
