Ascent on skis to the bishorn

Experience three days of ski touring in a unique environment with incredible impressions and many new experiences. With the support of the mountain railways of the St. Luc ski area in Val d'Anniviers, we will gain metres in altitude before descending into the Turtmann valley and ascending to the Turtmann hut. The next day, a breathtaking ascent will take us to the winter summit of the Brunegghorn and the Tracuit hut. On the third and final day, we climb the Bishorn, an easier but no less impressive four-thousand-metre peak. Finally, we enjoy the descent to Zinal, back to the Val d'Anniviers.

  • Detailed programme

Day 1: St. Luc / Bella Tola - Turtmann Hut

This alternative approach to the Turtmann Hut is somewhat unconventional compared to the classic route through the Turtmann Valley, but it has the advantage that you can make great descents on the first day and end up back in the same valley. With a ski lift we effortlessly reach the Bella Tola (3026 m) in the St. Luc-Chandolin ski area. From there our route leads over the Borterpass and the Meidtälli, where we cross the language border again and finally reach the Turtmanntal. We cross this above the valley floor in a southerly direction and climb past the Turtmannsee to the Turtmannhütte.

Day 2: Turtmannhütte - Brunegghorn - Cabane de Tracuit

From the Turtmannhütte we traverse almost level in a south-easterly direction through the so-called "Wanne" to the steep Gässi, a couloir that allows us to ascend to the Brunegg Glacier. On the glacier and past crevasse zones, we reach the winter summit of the Brunegghorn. The descent follows the Brunegg Glacier, but this time in a westerly direction, passing below the Adlerflüe. A beautiful descent awaits us as far as the confluence of the Brunegg and Turtmann glaciers at an altitude of around 2800 metres. From here we head uphill again towards the Tracuit hut.

Day 3: Cabane de Tracuit - Bishorn - Zinal

This day offers a classic ski tour with an impressively long descent. From the hut, the route leads eastwards over the initially flat Turtmann Glacier and the plateau. The ascent takes us through terrain of varying steepness. Experience shows that the summit is often blown off and icy hard. When this is the case, we change crampons and climb the last few metres to the summit of the Bishorn on foot. The descent to the hut follows the same route as the ascent. However, the route leads down over the Col de Tracuit into the Torrent du Barmé basin. After a short ascent, we descend through forests and along narrow paths to the valley, where we follow the course of the Navisence to Zinal.

I really enjoyed being out and about in the mountain and glacier world around the Bishorn with a colourful group. The two mountain guides, Reto and Kevin, carefully prepared us and accompanied us on our adventures, while also giving us plenty of training. Once again, thank you for everything! Irene Isler

Many thanks to Reto and Kevin for the three great tour days. You were great people and guided us competently through the varied tour. Thank you also for the valuable tips on ski touring techniques and route planning. I would be happy to book another tour with Bergschaft.
  • Martina Nussbaumer

We had a wonderful time in the Valais mountains! A fun and very harmonious group and as a topping 2 mountain guides who gave us a lot of safety, showed us lots of tips and tricks on the mountain and integrated us into the tour planning! Thank you so much for this wonderful and educational time out! I will come on a tour with you again any time!
  • Jeroen Flinterman

On our three-day tour with Reto and Kevin to the Bishorn and Brunegg (Turtmanhütte + Vabane de Tracuit) we had a lot of fun. For me as a Dutchman (Holland/Netherlands) doing a longer tour than one day, it was fantastic. Both tour guides were very entertaining, took their job seriously and included us in the tour planning! Thanks a lot guys. Our group was above average in skiing and ascent (although I am a beginner in ascent). Thanks to the good tips, I was able to find my own rhythm and keep up with the groups. I will definitely come back to you for another tour and can recommend everyone to go to Bergschaft and try this fantastic ski tour.
  • Melanie Tinzl-Zechner

We would like to thank Hannes, Simon and Bergschaft for the great tour to the Brunegghorn (winter summit) and the Bishorn. It was a great three days of ski touring and we look forward to the next tours with you!
