Ski mountaineering tours combine the fascination of ski touring with the challenges of the high mountains: glaciers, crampons and rope technology come into play. Have you already done guided high-altitude ski tours and would now like to master such tours on your own without a mountain guide? In this course, we will teach you the key basics. We practise the correct use of crampons and ice axes, learn various roping and safety techniques and practise the most important rope manoeuvres for ski mountaineering tours. This also includes rescue methods such as crevasse rescue. We put what we have learnt directly into practice on tours, from the ascent over deep snow and glaciers to a safe descent.

Target: After this course you will be able to plan and organise ski tours on your own responsibility.

  • Procedure and meeting place

These 4 days of high-altitude ski touring in the Glarus Alps combine training and practice: together we work on the most important basics for safe high-altitude ski touring and put what we have learnt into practice on impressive tours to the surrounding peaks such as Clariden and Schärhorn. Away from everyday life, we gain experience in the high mountains and enjoy the descents over glaciers and firn slopes.

    • Meeting place

      9 a.m. Fisetenbahn valley station

We will meet at Urnerboden. If there are enough vehicles available, we can form car pools from Ziegelbrücke.

    • Day 1 - Ascent Claridenhütte

      1200 metres altitude

From the top station of the Fiseten cable car, we ascend via the Gemsfairenstock to the Claridenhütte. On the way, we practise the basics of handling our equipment and enjoy the view of the vast glacier world.

    • Day 2 - Clariden ascent & crossing to the Planura hut

      900 metres altitude

      600 Hm

      6-7h

From the hut, we climb over the Hüfifirn towards Clariden. After the summit, we continue across the impressive glacier landscape to the Planura hut.

    • Day 3 - Tour on the Schärhorn

      1100 metres altitude

      5-6h

Today is the tour to the Schärhorn. During the tour, we can once again put the course content into practice. We return to the Planura hut in the afternoon.

    • Training content

During these four days you will learn:

      • Material science and correct use of technical equipment
      • Use and handling of crampons and ice axe
      • Various techniques for transporting the skis on the rucksack
      • Rope types and walking on the glacier rope
      • Safe behaviour on glaciers and in alpine terrain
      • Choice of terrain in ascent and descent
      • Self Ascent Basics
      • Anchoring in firn
      • Crevasse rescue basics
      • Tour planning in the evening

After this course you will be well prepared to plan and organise easy and medium ski tours independently.

    • Day 4 - Final tour & descent into the valley

      700 - 900 metres altitude

      2000 metres altitude

      5-6h

Finally, depending on the conditions, we undertake another high-altitude ski tour and then ski back down to the valley via long glacier slopes.
