Lyngen Alps, Norway

Highlights

The Lyngen Alps offer everything that makes for an exceptional ski touring holiday: peaks rising directly from the fjords, long descents with views of the sea, and a stunning Arctic landscape. Thanks to the wide variety of touring options, we can make the most of the best conditions every day and experience the region in all its facets. Our home for the week is the comfortable XLyngen, situated right by the fjord, where we can relax after our tours, enjoy northern Norwegian hospitality and, with a bit of luck, even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. The combination of spectacular ski tours, cosy accommodation, Nordic culture and the unique atmosphere of the far north makes this trip a truly special experience.

Ski touring trip

The Lyngen Alps are among the most impressive ski touring areas in Europe. Here, rugged peaks rise straight out of the fjords, long descents lead almost to the sea, and a new touring destination opens up behind every bay. The combination of high mountains, the sea and the Arctic light makes this region a unique experience for ski tourers. Over the course of a week, we’ll explore the most beautiful routes on the Lyngen Peninsula. Every day, we’ll ascend from the fjords to panoramic summits and enjoy varied descents across wide slopes, gullies and glacier flanks. Most tours cover around 1,000 metres of elevation gain – sometimes more, sometimes less – and offer an ideal blend of enjoyment, adventure and scenic variety. Thanks to the wide range of options available, we can adapt flexibly to the weather, snow and avalanche conditions and choose the best tour each day.

Our home for the week is the XLyngen, situated right on the Lyngenfjord. This modern lodge offers comfortable rooms, excellent catering and a fantastic view of the surrounding peaks. After our tours, we’ll relax in the sauna, enjoy northern Norwegian hospitality and wind down together as we reflect on the day’s adventures.

As well as offering excellent opportunities for ski touring, the Lyngen Alps captivate visitors with the trendy city of Tromsø, the vastness of the landscape, the small fishing villages and the tranquillity of the north. The unique play of light gives the trip its distinctive character. With a bit of luck, you might even see the Northern Lights in the sky in the evening.

This trip is aimed at experienced ski tourers who wish to discover one of Europe’s most beautiful ski touring destinations. Anyone who has ever skied from the summit down almost to the sea will immediately understand why the Lyngen Alps are regarded by many as the heart of ski touring in Northern Norway.

  • Procedure and meeting place

    • Meeting place

We’ll meet either at Zurich Airport for our flight together to Tromsø, or straight after arriving at Tromsø Airport.

    • Day 1: Arrival in Tromsø and transfer to Nord-Lenangen

Individual travel to Tromsø. In the afternoon, we’ll meet at the airport and travel together to Nord-Lenangen in the Lyngen Alps. The journey along the fjords takes around two to three hours and takes us straight into the heart of Northern Norway’s stunning landscape. After checking into our rooms at the XLyngen, we’ll get to know one another over dinner and discuss the week ahead.

    • Days 2 to 7: Ski touring in the Lyngen Alps

Over six days, we’ll explore the most beautiful ski tours in the Lyngen Alps. Starting directly from the fjords, we’ll ascend to peaks offering spectacular views and enjoy long descents with views of the sea, islands and the striking mountains of Northern Norway. The choice of routes each day depends on the weather, snow and avalanche conditions. Thanks to the wide variety of options available, we’ll find suitable destinations for every situation and can make the most of the region’s best conditions. The daily ascents are usually between 1,000 and 1,500 metres in altitude. At the start of the week, we’ll refresh your knowledge of the key principles of avalanche awareness and companion rescue. Throughout the trip, you’ll also benefit from your mountain guide’s advice and coaching on route planning, track-setting and staying safe in the winter mountains. As well as the tours, there’s plenty of time to enjoy the special atmosphere of the Lyngen Alps, whether it’s a session in the sauna, a soak in the hot tub or an evening meal together with a view of the fjords. Depending on the weather and conditions, there’s also the option of a trip to the trendy city of Tromsø.

    • Day 8: Return journey

After breakfast, we’ll travel back to Tromsø together. Afterwards, you can either make your own way home or extend your stay in Northern Norway.

  • Requirements

    • Solid ski touring technique, including the basics (skins, kick turns). These are often standard ski tours, similar to those we are familiar with in Switzerland. Where possible, we also include tours that involve glacier crossings and sections where we have to take our skis off or walk part of the way.
    • Safe skiing techniques in open terrain and on various types of snow. Norway has it all: from deep powder snow to wind-packed snow and crusted snow, right through to perfect firn or icy sections.
    • Fitness required for a 1,000hm climb at a leisurely pace over the course of a week. Some days we’ll cover less than 800–1,000hm, and others more. We’ll organise the tours so that we have enough energy to last the whole week!
