Ski touring in Norway: Magical descents between mountain peaks and fjords

The peak season for ski touring in Norway runs from early March to mid-May. During this period, the days are already considerably longer and the temperatures slightly milder. In April in particular, you can often enjoy perfect powder snow or fantastic firn, whilst also benefiting from plenty of daylight for extended tours in the Lyngen Alps or Finnmark.

With the ‘Ski and Sail Norway’ concept, a sailing ship or a cutter serves as a floating base camp. We navigate through the deep fjords and anchor right at the foot of the mountains. This means we set off on our ski tours from the beach and return to the ship in the evening. A major advantage of ski touring in Norway by boat is the flexibility – we can sail to wherever the snow and weather are at their best.

You should be a competent skier who can ski confidently off-piste in various snow conditions (powder, crusted snow, firn). In terms of fitness, our day trips usually involve an ascent of between 1,000 and 1,500 metres in altitude. Experience in using climbing skins and performing kick turns is essential. However, as we start from sea level (0 metres above sea level), there is no need for the sort of altitude acclimatisation we are familiar with in the Alps.

It depends on your preferences: the Lofoten Islands captivate with their pointed, steep peaks and extremely spectacular fjord scenery. Lyngen offers a more alpine and glaciated mountain landscape, ideal for classic, long-distance ski tours. Senja, often described as ‘miniature Norway’, boasts a wild coastline with fantastic wooded and open slopes. Finnmark, in the far north, is somewhat gentler, extremely vast and ideal for explorers seeking absolute solitude.

As space in the cabins on a ship is limited, we strongly recommend a flexible travel bag (duffel bag) rather than a hard-shell wheeled suitcase. The ski touring kit is the same as in the Alps (avalanche transceiver, shovel, probe, crampons). You should also dress in layers, as the weather at the Arctic Circle can change quickly, and pack comfortable clothing for the evenings below deck.

Thanks to its proximity to the sea and the Gulf Stream, temperatures are milder than one might expect so far north. The humid coastal climate brings plenty of rainfall – which often means deep powder snow right down to the sea. However, as the weather is influenced by the Atlantic, it can also be windy. Our mountain guides are familiar with the local microclimate and find the wind-sheltered slopes with the best snow every day.
