Ski touring trip Georgia | Svaneti
Ski touring adventures where the road ends: Pristine mountain villages with a simple lifestyle, surrounded by mighty 5,000 metre peaks, await you. Lonely valleys, the finest powder snow and two modern ski areas - embedded in the spectacular natural scenery of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Highlights
The Georgian region of Svaneti, deep in the wild Caucasus, delights with unspoilt ski touring opportunities amidst imposing 5,000-metre peaks. Georgia offers ideal conditions for varied tours - from classic ascents on secluded slopes to freeride tours from two modern, barely frequented ski resorts. And don't worry: despite the modern infrastructure, the lifts are only accessible via a simple gravel track, so there are no crowds of tourists. The villages are rustic and authentic: fortified stone towers, simple wooden and stone houses and an impressive culture characterise the landscape.
We spend the night in familiar, clean and cosily heated accommodation and indulge in the famous Georgian hospitality.
Ski touring trip
Our ski tour to Georgia takes you deep into the fascinating region of Svaneti and is divided into two sections. Both are full of impressions, solitude and impressive landscapes. In the first part of our trip, we spend the night in a cosy guesthouse in the village of Mestia at around 1,500 m and set off from there on tours into the surrounding side valleys. We will also use the two small, modern ski resorts in the region - whether for classic freetouring days with short ascents or, when fresh snow has fallen, for pure freeriding. A special highlight: if the conditions are right, we will be chauffeured up around 1,000 metres in altitude by snow groomer, climb over a pass and experience a descent of over 2,000 metres over a glacier through the wild high mountain landscape of the Caucasus - a day to remember! The second part of our journey takes us to Ushguli, situated at 2,100 metres above sea level - the highest permanently inhabited village in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Between centuries-old defence towers, narrow alleyways, free-roaming horses and cows, time seems to stand still. We start our tours directly from here - with a view of the mighty Shkhara (5,201 m), the highest peak in Georgia. Ushguli is exposed and treeless - this means: hardly any forest, but open terrain and the best conditions in good weather. Our itinerary is flexible so that we can fully savour this special terrain when the conditions are right. In both places, we stay in lovingly run guesthouses with double rooms, are cooked typical Georgian specialities and experience genuine hospitality. We travel in local 4×4 minivans with drivers, which gives us comfort and flexibility on the sometimes adventurous roads. After the tour, we might enjoy a glass of chacha - the traditional pomace brandy - and savour Georgian classics such as khachapuri, khinkali, badridzhani or shashlik. A real culinary highlight! Georgia is like travelling back in time: wild, untouched mountains, small, remote villages and a ski touring experience that is both pristine and intense. Experience this special adventure with us - between culture, culinary delights and unforgettable descents.

Procedure and journey
We travel to Georgia and enjoy the countless touring options and variations in Mestia and Ushguli. We plan the tours according to conditions and circumstances and look for great, secluded ski touring terrain.
In the afternoon we will travel in carpools to Memmingen Airport near Munich (~3 hours from Zurich). There is a direct flight to Kutaisi. We arrive in Kutaisi late in the evening and are surprised at the airport with European flags. We spend the night in a hotel right next to the airport.
Flight from Memmingen, 17.45Today we enjoy a local breakfast buffet and get to know the local hospitality. We are then picked up by local drivers and make several stops on the way to Mestia, where we move into our spacious accommodation for the next few days. Mestia is a small town in the middle of the mountains. Here we have several great restaurants to choose from for dinner. We have breakfast at our accommodation.
From Mestia, we undertake various tours from the ski area, depending on the conditions. These are either classic ski tours or, if the conditions are right, by snow groomer with a magnificent traverse. The area is rich and we can start from the Tetnuldi ski area in the Mazeri or Laila valleys. There is also a ski tour right on the doorstep. On site, we travel with local drivers and can also visit their homes.
After Mestia, we move on to the remote mountain village of Ushguli. This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and can only be reached in around 3 hours by 4×4. We spend 2 nights here and undertake 3 ski tours from the village. We stay in a cosy guest house with half board. Ushguli is a small village with countless ski touring opportunities right on the doorstep. On the last day, after the ski tour, we return to our accommodation in Mestia.
After a fitting final evening, the drivers will return directly to the airport on the last day and from there back to Switzerland at midday. Arrival 17.10 in Memmingen.
Requirements
- Mastering the ski touring technique with its basics (skins, hairpin bends). These are often normal ski tours, as we know them from Switzerland. If possible, we also include tours with passages where we tie on the skis or a foot ascent is included.
- Safe downhill technique in open terrain and in different types of snow. We often find the most beautiful powder snow. But like everywhere else, the weather can do what it wants.
- Stamina for around 1000 metres of ascent at a leisurely pace over a week. Sometimes we will do less than 1000 metres and sometimes more. We divide the tours so that we have enough energy for all days!
- Splitboarders are welcome, provided they are experienced.
