Highlights

Senja is a ski touring paradise, where magnificent ski tours, often with the best snow conditions, meet a lonely touring area in the middle of the branching and winding fjord landscape. In between, the steep granite walls fall directly into the sea, creating a unique backdrop. We stay in a very comfortable house with double and single rooms, enjoy the local half-board and relax in the hot tub or sauna after the tours and marvel at the northern lights in the evening.

Ski touring trip

Senja is the second largest island in Norway and offers impressive landscapes. Here the granite walls drop directly into the sea and in between there are fantastic ski touring opportunities, from leisurely to sporty, and also the typical birch forests, for powder days in bad weather and fresh snow. The journey is possible in comfort with a direct flight from Zurich and we are already on skis in Senja on the second day. The touring options are numerous. We have access to 6 different fjords and the tours range from powder runs in the sparse birch forests to exciting crossings with panoramic peaks. We live comfortably in a large house right by the sea. Here we have double and single rooms and enjoy the local half-board. It has a hot tub and a sauna so that we can really relax after the tour and in the evening we are surprised by the Northern Lights!

  • Procedure and meeting place

We are travelling up north. Senja lies at 69° north, well above the Arctic Circle. In April we still have real winter here and can drive from the mountains down to the sea.

    • Day 1 - Arrival

There is a direct flight from Zurich to Tromsø. We meet here and check into the hire car and drive to the island of Senja on the same day (around 3 hours by car). Here we move into our spacious house in Mefjord Brygge and plan the ski tour for the next day. We enjoy breakfast and dinner in the restaurant next door, which is run by the house.

    • Day 2 - 6 - Ski tours in Senja

      800 - 1200 metres altitude

      L - WS+

From now on, we go on a ski tour on Senja every day. There are countless possibilities. Depending on the weather, conditions and wishes of the group, we choose the most suitable one. The ski touring mountains are 800 - 1000 metres high and so we undertake day tours with around 1000 metres of ascent. There are tours right in the fjord by the accommodation. There are also fjords which we can reach in around 30 minutes and which offer further possibilities. We will certainly visit the village of Fjordgård, because there is a fantastic, varied tour up the Hesten. At the summit, you can look straight down the rock face to the sea. Other tours on the programme include Store Hesten with its magnificent descents and impressive plateaus, Krokelvtinden with its many possibilities, Husfjellet with its magnificent, direct descent to the sea and unique views of the fjords, as well as the peaks in Kaperdalen and Kvaenan, one of Senja's highest mountains.

    • Day 7 - last ski tour and journey to Tromsø

Today we travel back to Tromsø and go on one last ski tour on the way there to say goodbye to Senja. We spend the night in a hotel in Tromsø so we can visit the small town, see the fishing museum and celebrate our last evening and our trip together!

    • Day 8 - Return journey

In the morning, it's off to the nearby airport and home.

  • Requirements

    • Mastering the ski touring technique with its basics (skins, hairpin bends). These are often normal ski tours, as we know them from Switzerland. If possible, we also include tours with passages where we tie on the skis or a foot ascent is included.
    • Safe downhill technique in open terrain and in different types of snow. We often find the most beautiful powder snow. But like everywhere else, the weather can do what it wants.
    • Condition for 1000m of ascent at a leisurely pace over a week. Sometimes we will do less than 1000m and sometimes more. We divide the tours so that we have enough energy for all days!
    • Splitboarders are welcome.
