Which avalanche course is right for you?

  • For Beginners & Newcomers (Basic Courses): Are you still new to off-piste skiing? No problem. On our avalanche training course for beginners, you’ll learn the absolute basics without any pressure to perform: how avalanche transceivers, shovels and probes work, how to interpret the avalanche bulletin, and the basics of risk management.
  • For Advanced (Practical & Refresher Courses): Do you go ski touring regularly? In these courses, we explore complex snowpack analysis and route planning in difficult terrain in greater depth, and practise efficient avalanche rescue scenarios.
  • Avalanche courses near you: We’re where the best snow is. Find your course in popular regions such as the Bernese Oberland, the Central Switzerland, Grisons or the Wallis. Our avalanche theory evenings take place in Zurich, Bern and Lucerne instead.

Ski touring course overview

The basic courses are for beginners and require little or no prior knowledge. The practical and advanced courses build on previous knowledge and therefore require prior knowledge.

Questions and answers about avalanche courses and how to be faster than the avalanche ?¿

  • Do I need any prior knowledge to take a beginner’s avalanche course?

No, you don’t need any prior knowledge of avalanche safety for our beginners’ courses (Level 1). You just need to be confident on skis or a snowboard to be able to ski or snowboard in open terrain.

  • Can I take part in the course on a splitboard or with snowshoes?

Splitboarders are always very welcome on our avalanche courses! If you’d like to take part wearing snowshoes, please get in touch with us briefly so that we can adapt the terrain accordingly.

  • Where do the avalanche courses take place?

Our training courses take place throughout Switzerland. Particularly popular locations include the Bernese Oberland, Central Switzerland (e.g. Andermatt, Engelberg), Graubünden (e.g. Davos) and Valais (Simplon).

  • Is avalanche equipment included in the course?

Standard equipment (avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe) is essential. If you do not yet have your own equipment, we will be happy to advise you on hiring or purchasing it before the course.

  • What is standard avalanche equipment?

It is always part of your equipment, even if you are travelling alone:

    • Avalanche transceiver (LVS)
    • Shovel
    • Sone

An airbag rucksack is not standard, but is almost always worn when freeriding.

  • Why should I take an avalanche course with a mountain guide?

As certified Swiss mountain guides, we’re out and about in the snow every day. We don’t just teach you dry theory, but also provide you with the very latest practical knowledge, real-life case studies and the highest possible level of safety in the mountains.

  • When should you take an avalanche course?

Everyone who regularly goes off-piste in the snow should complete an avalanche course. This also includes regular training in the use of standard equipment, avalanche transceivers, probes and shovels.

Everything you need to know about avalanches

  • What types of avalanches are there?

There are three types of avalanches:

    • Dust avalanche
    • Loose snow avalanche
    • Slab avalanche (this is the most relevant avalanche for skiers and ski tourers)

  • How do avalanches occur?

The following five conditions are required for an avalanche:

    • Weak layer in the snow cover
    • Bound snow over the weak layer (board)
    • Wide distribution of weak layer and board
    • Slope inclination over 30°
    • Additional load (usually one person)
