Climbing holidays in Sardinia | Fantastic climbing by the sea
Climbing on the fascinating rock faces of Sardinia - with a view of the turquoise water, sun on your face, Italian dolce vita and a dip in the sea in the evening - climbing holidays in Sardinia!
Highlights
Sardinia inspires with its wild beauty, impressive limestone cliffs and crystal-clear, turquoise blue sea. There are countless climbing routes of all levels of difficulty, especially around Cala Gonone. The combination of sun, rock and sea makes Sardinia a true paradise for climbers. A particular highlight are the multi-pitch routes on Pedra Longa, a striking rock spike that rises directly out of the sea. There you can climb with a view of the endless blue and enjoy the Mediterranean flair of the island at the same time. After eventful days, the sea, the sun and the relaxed atmosphere invite you to end the evening with a dip in the water or a meal together.
Climbing trip
Together we will spend a week in the climbing paradise of Sardinia. Our accommodation is located in Cala Gonone, a charming coastal village right by the sea - ideally situated to reach the surrounding climbing areas quickly. The region offers an enormous variety of routes at all levels of difficulty, perfect for combining technique, endurance and climbing pleasure.
The focus of this week is on sport climbing, which Cala Gonone has to offer in all its diversity. From well-secured routes right by the sea to spectacular rock formations in the hinterland, everything is on offer. For a special adventure, we take a trip to Pedra Longa, around 40 minutes away by car. Breathtaking multi-pitch routes high above the crystal-clear sea await us there - an experience you won't forget in a hurry.
After the climbing days, there is plenty of time to enjoy the Sardinian joie de vivre, swim in the sea or stroll through the alleyways of Cala Gonone and indulge in the dolce vita. We round off the days together with good food, sea views and Italian flair.
Journey and tour itinerary
There are regular flights from Zurich to Olbia. You can reach Olbia by plane in just 1:30 hours. We meet at the airport and travel on together from there.
Alternatively, you can travel by train and ferry. This takes around 1.5 days. The ferry runs overnight.
We meet in Olbia and have a relaxed start to the week - with a first Italian espresso and a fresh cornetto, of course. We take this opportunity to get to know each other, share our expectations and get in the mood for the climbing days ahead.
Afterwards we drive together in the direction of Cala Gonone, about 1.5 hours by car. We climb comfortably in a climbing garden on the way and enjoy our first contact with rock. The afternoon will fly by before we move into our accommodation in Cala Gonone in the evening. There will be enough time for a refreshing shower before we round off the day with a delicious dinner and plan the next few days of climbing together.
To get to know each other better on the rock, we start in a climbing garden. There we can brush up on safety-related topics and create a common basis for the coming days.

We climb in various areas around Cala Gonone and enjoy the special contrast that Sardinia offers: turquoise blue sea, warm rock and Mediterranean flair. Over the course of the four days, we discover numerous climbing spots of varying degrees of difficulty and also repeat the techniques of multi-pitch climbing.
A special highlight awaits us at Pedra Longa, where we climb an unforgettable multi-pitch route directly above the sea - with breathtaking views and the sound of the sea in our ears.
In between, there is plenty of time to swim in the sea, stroll through Cala Gonone and savour the Italian joie de vivre.Target:
We climbed in various climbing areas, improved our technique and learnt new things. We also refreshed or learnt multi-pitch techniques and applied them on a tour. A carefree time together is an essential part of the experience - and, of course, the fun must not be neglected! The last day of our climbing holiday is open and offers space to relax and round off our time together in Cala Gonone. In the morning, you have the opportunity to do something individually - be it a last dip in the turquoise sea, a leisurely walk along the coast or a cappuccino with a view of the harbour.
During the course of the day, we drive back to Olbia together in the hire car. From there, everyone can organise their return journey individually. Those travelling by ferry will of course be taken to the port. This way we can end the week in peace and quiet and look back on the memories of sun, sea and impressive climbing days.
We finish the week together in Olbia.

FAQ Climbing holidays Sardinia
What level of climber is the trip to Sardinia suitable for?
Cala Gonone offers a huge selection of routes at all levels of difficulty. On this trip, we will be focussing primarily on the 5b to 6b range. As Sardinia is known for its rough, often very sharp-edged limestone, we will help you to refine your foot technique. You should be able to lead climb and belay safely. We adapt the choice of sectors to the level of the group every day so that everyone gets their money's worth.
How big is the group?
We emphasise quality and safety. The trip takes place in a small group of 4 to 6 guests per mountain guide. This allows us to provide personalised coaching and a flexible choice of sectors depending on your wishes.
How does travelling to Sardinia work?
The journey is made individually. Most guests fly to Olbia (OLB) or take the ferry (e.g. from Livorno or Genoa). Our adventure together starts directly at Olbia airport, where we will pick you up. From there we will take a hire car (approx. 1.5 hours) to our base camp in Cala Gonone. This flexibility allows you to arrive earlier or add a few more days to your beach holiday.
Why are climbing holidays in Sardinia best in spring and autumn?
Spring and autumn are the absolute top months for a climbing trip to Sardinia. In spring, the whole island is in bloom and the temperatures are perfect for long climbing days. In autumn, the sea is still pleasantly warm from the summer - ideal for the obligatory dip in the water after climbing. In midsummer, it would simply be too hot on the limestone walls of Cala Gonone.
What makes climbing in Sardinia so special?
Sardinia offers many climbing opportunities. Cala Gonone in particular is legendary for its climbing directly above the sea. Sectors such as “Cala Luna” or “Cala Fuili” are known worldwide. The rock offers everything: from technical slabs to athletic overhangs and large caves. The region also offers fantastic opportunities for multi-pitch climbs, which we can integrate into the week depending on the group's wishes and ability.
What services are included in the price?
We at Bergschaft take care of all the logistics on site:
-
Planning, organisation and coaching by qualified IVBV mountain guides.
-
Accommodation in cosy accommodation in Cala Gonone.
-
Car hire from/to Olbia including all journeys to the climbing areas.
-
Breakfast: We prepare breakfast together at the accommodation. We buy these locally on site.
-
Dinner is not included. We will either prepare this with local ingredients (feta, olive oil, vegetables) in our accommodation or eat out in one of the authentic, cosy restaurants in Leonidio or Plaka.
-
Do I need my own car on site?
No. As soon as we meet in Olbia, we take over. The hire car is included in the price. This is a great advantage in Sardinia, as many of the most beautiful sectors and bays around Cala Gonone can only be reached via narrow roads, for which we have the right vehicle.
How safe are the climbing routes in Sardinia?
Sardinia has a long climbing tradition. Most of the sectors around Cala Gonone are excellently secured with stainless steel (plaisir climbing). Our mountain guides know the areas inside out and only select sectors that meet current safety standards so that you can concentrate fully on your climbing technique.
