Leonidio Greece

Highlights

Leonidio inspires with its imposing red and yellow limestone walls, Mediterranean landscape and the deep blue sea. In recent years, this small town in the Peloponnese has developed into a true climbing paradise: With enormous dedication, passion and commitment, countless new routes have been set up - well secured with good equipment and the potential is far from exhausted.

When you arrive in Leonidio, you immediately feel the climbing spirit. The charming village is full of climbers from all over the world, people talk shop, laugh and plan projects, the community is lively and present everywhere. At the same time, the Greek hospitality is overwhelming: the vegetable seller, the baker or the restaurant owner will strike up a conversation with you, are happy to see you and convey that special, relaxed serenity for which Greece is so well known. No culinary wish remains unfulfilled: Mediterranean cuisine with fresh ingredients, flavoursome feta, sun-ripened vegetables and the best olive oil invite you to enjoy and share.

The absolute highlight is, of course, the climbing itself. Leonidio offers an impressive variety - from vertical pleasure routes to spectacular tufa climbing, which can even be found here at moderate levels of difficulty. The combination of varied rock, fantastic structures and the view of the sea makes Leonidio a climbing paradise where everyone gets their money's worth.

Climbing trip

Together we will spend a week in the climbing paradise of Leonidio. Our accommodation is located in the village or near the coast at Plaka - ideally situated to reach the numerous sectors in just a few minutes on foot or by car. The region offers an enormous variety of sport climbing routes at all levels of difficulty and is perfect for combining technique, endurance and personal projects.

This week's focus is on sport climbing on the diverse limestone walls around Leonidio. From vertical pleasure routes to athletic overhangs and impressive tufa lines, everything is included. Depending on the group, we also plan an excursion to one of the higher sectors with sweeping views over the coast and mountains or, for the more adventurous, a selected multi-pitch route above the village.

In addition to climbing, there is plenty of time to enjoy the Greek way of life: a swim in the sea, a stroll through the alleyways of Leonidio or dinner together in a taverna with a view of the rock faces we climbed during the day. Sun, rock, sea and good food - a week full of exercise, enjoyment and fellowship.

    • Journey

There are regular flights from Zurich to Athens. You can reach Athens by plane in just 2h40min. We meet at the airport and travel on together from there. The journey to Leonidio takes about 3 hours.

    • Day 1 - Arriving and climbing in

We meet at Athens airport and have a relaxed start to the week. We drive together in the hire car towards Leonidio, which is about 3 hours by car. We take short breaks in between and get our first fresh oranges.

    • Day 2 - Climbing and training

To get to know each other better on the rock, we start in a climbing garden. There we can brush up on safety-related topics and create a common basis for the coming days.

      Daily destination:
All participants know their own skills and those of their counterparts. The rope teams are formed and everyone feels safe and ready for the climbing days ahead.

    • Days 3-6

We climb in various areas around Leonidio and enjoy the special contrast that Greece offers: turquoise blue sea, warm rock and Mediterranean flair. Over the course of the four days, we discover numerous climbing spots of varying degrees of difficulty and also repeat the techniques of multi-pitch climbing. For those who want to, the high walls above Leonidio offer great multi-pitch routes in the lower 6th grade to be climbed.
In between, there is plenty of time to swim in the sea, stroll through the village and savour the Greek joie de vivre.

      Target:
We climbed in various climbing areas, improved our technique and learnt new things. We also refreshed or learnt multi-pitch techniques and applied them on a tour. A carefree time together is an essential part of the experience, and of course the fun must not be neglected!

    • Day 7 - Return journey

The last day of our climbing holiday is open and offers space to relax and round off our time together in Leonidio. In the morning, you have the opportunity to do something individually - be it a last dip in the sea at Plaka, a leisurely stroll through the charming village or a cappuccino in one of the tavernas with a view of the rock faces.

During the course of the day, we will start our return journey together. Those who wish can organise their journey home individually or enjoy the Greek sun and atmosphere for a few last hours on site. This way we can end the week in peace and quiet and reminisce about the memories of sun, sea and impressive climbing days.

FAQ Climbing holidays Leonidio - The most important questions & answers

  • When is the best time to go climbing in Greece?

The season in Leonidio differs significantly from alpine regions. While it is often too cold for rock climbing in Switzerland from November to March, Leonidio has the best climbing season. Thanks to the sheltered location on the Peloponnese and the many south-facing sectors, you can often climb here in a T-shirt even over Christmas and New Year. The daytime temperatures are mild and the red limestone stores the sun's heat perfectly - ideal for anyone who wants to escape the Swiss winter and spend sunny, warm days at the crag.

  • What climbing level is the trip to Leonidio suitable for?

Leonidio is an Eldorado for pleasure climbers. We are primarily in the 4c to 6b range. As the protection on site is very good (Plaisir standard and new, stainless steel equipment), the area is ideal for honing your technique without stress. You should be able to belay and climb independently in lead climbing. If you wish, you can also gain your first experience of the impressive multi-pitch routes (up to the lower 6th degree) above the village under the guidance of our IVBV-certified mountain guides. If we are planning a multi-pitch route, we will refresh our knowledge the day before.

  • How big is the group?

We emphasise quality and safety. The trip takes place in a small group of 4 to 6 guests per mountain guide. This allows us to provide personalised coaching and a flexible choice of sectors depending on your wishes.

  • What makes Leonidio so special compared to other areas?

In contrast to very touristy areas, Leonidio has retained its Greek village character. The rocks are world-class (red limestone, tufas), the protection is modern and safe. The combination is a highlight: steep limestone walls in the morning, a dip in the crystal-clear Mediterranean at Plaka in the afternoon and Greek serenity in the village in the evening.

  • What can I expect when climbing in Leonidio?

You can expect the best limestone with a good grip. Leonidio is famous for its huge sinter (tufas) and spectacular caves, but also offers very beautiful, vertical and technical wall climbing. The variety of sectors is huge, from sunny walls with a view of the deep blue sea to shady, higher sectors for warmer days.

  • What does a typical day look like?

After breakfast together, we drive by hire car to the chosen sector (approaches often only 5-20 minutes). We spend the day at the crag with individual coaching. In the late afternoon, we often enjoy a dip in the sea at Plaka before rounding off the day in the Panjika Bar or cooking together in our accommodation.

  • What services are included in the price of CHF 1950?

The Bergschaft package includes everything you need on site:

    • Professional guidance by qualified mountain guides.

    • Accommodation in comfortable accommodation in Leonidio or Plaka.

    • Breakfast: We prepare breakfast together at the accommodation. We buy these locally on site.

    • Car hire including fuel for all transfers from/to Athens and to the rocks.

Dinner is not included. We will either prepare this with local ingredients (feta, olive oil, vegetables) in our accommodation or eat out in one of the authentic, cosy restaurants in Leonidio or Plaka.

  • Is the flight to Athens included?

No, the flight is not included. This gives you maximum flexibility in your choice of airline (from Zurich, Basel or Geneva) and allows you to extend your climbing holiday in Greece as you wish. We meet as a group at Athens Airport (ATH). From there we take care of all the logistics and you don't have to worry about anything else.

  • Do I need special equipment for multi-pitch (MSL)?

Yes, for the MSL days you need the material according to our special material list (see PDF download). As the protection in Leonidio is very modern, an 80m rope and 14-16 quickdraws (which we coordinate as a group) are sufficient for the sport climbing routes. A helmet is obligatory.

  • What is the Panjika Co-operative and what role does it play?

The Panjika Co-operative is the heart of the climbing community in Leonidio. It is a joint project of climbers and locals that runs a café, a bar and a meeting place. Not only do people talk shop here and plan the next “project”, but the cooperative is also actively involved in drilling new routes, renovations and sustainable tourism in the area. A visit for a coffee or a beer after climbing is simply part of the authentic Leonidio experience.
