The Salbit South Ridge is a true classic, and for good reason: solid, rugged Uri granite, spectacular towers, striking ridge sections and scenery that is simply breathtaking. Anyone who has ever been up there understands why this route is regarded as one of the most beautiful ridge climbs in the Alps. The climbing is varied, exposed but never overwhelming – perfect flake holds, great cracks and plenty of friction ensure pure climbing enjoyment. The difficulty levels remain moderate and are usually well below the maximum of 5b.
We’re making the most of the lovely late-summer weather on the spur of the moment for this special climbing experience. You can head up to the Salbi Hut the evening before and settle in comfortably to get in the mood for the day’s climbing ahead. Early in the morning, you’ll meet your mountain guide at the hut and together you’ll set off for the south ridge. A long, varied day’s climbing awaits you amidst the impressive mountain landscape of Uri.
Procedure and meeting place
The mountain guide will meet you at the Salbi Hut at 6.30 am. You’re welcome to make your way up to the hut the evening before and get yourself in the right frame of mind for the day’s climbing.
With light rucksacks, high spirits and in the capable hands of our experienced mountain guide, we set out to tackle the Salbit South Ridge. From tower to tower, the route takes us up and down over exposed ridge sections, linked by short abseil sections. In between, a variety of pitches await us in the rugged Uri granite – always against the impressive backdrop of the Salbit. In total, we spend around 5–8 hours climbing. Once at the top, we take time for a short break and enjoy the fantastic views. Then the descent begins, which once again demands concentration and sure-footedness. Back at the hut, we make a brief stop, repack our rucksacks and perhaps fortify ourselves with a slice of the legendary hut cake.
After a wonderful day’s climbing, the mountain guide says goodbye to you at the hut. You can then take your time on the descent from the hut and head home with some stunning images in your mind.
Requirements
- You are proficient in belaying on multi-pitch routes and are experienced in this handling.
- You can climb up to grade 5 (5a compulsory).
- You’ll need to be fit enough for an ascent of 1,000 metres in altitude and a 5–7-hour climb, plus the descent.
Price and services
- CHF 790 or CHF 1,490 for a one-to-one session.
- Takes place with up to 2 guests per mountain guide.
- Including planning and realisation with mountain guide and his/her travel expenses.
- An exclusive overnight stay in a mountain hut the night before.
- Excluding travel expenses, possible train tickets, personal consumption.
Material and equipment

Bergschaft tours and courses are conducted in German as standard. However, our mountain guides speak good English, as do many of the participants. If you speak English, you are of course very welcome. Depending on the tour, it may be worth asking us in advance whether the guide and the group are comfortable speaking English.
