Gonzenwand Climbing Tour | An alpine adventure on the Gonzen

The Gonzen towers impressively over Sargans and is best known for its panoramic summit and striking rock formation. Whilst the classic ladder route already features exposed sections and ladders, for our tour we’ve chosen a considerably wilder line through the Gonzenwand. Together, we set off into alpine terrain. From the start at the ‘Nasenlöcher’, the route continues with varied scrambling. Ladders, rock ledges and exposed sections demand sure-footedness, a sense of direction and a love of alpine terrain. Via the ‘Leiterweg’, we continue towards the Mittelband. Time and again, spectacular views open up down towards Sargans and across the Rhine Valley. The route’s appeal lies less in individual major climbing sections than in the constant alternation between rock, narrow ledges, scrambling and exposed terrain. Via the Mittelband, we finally reach the south ridge, which takes us to the upper part of the Gonzen. Here, focused and confident climbing is once again required before the route opens up towards the summit. Once at the top, not only does the summit experience await, but also an impressive panoramic view over the Rhine Valley, Lake Walen, the Churfirsten and far beyond. The descent follows the standard route back to the car park.
