High Altitude Tour | Crossing of the Sustenhorn with Mountain Guide
An easy high-altitude hike that crosses the imposing Steingletscher and includes a short, straightforward climbing section.
The Sustenhorn is a fantastic mountain. The traverse from the secluded Chelenalptal valley is particularly rewarding. The Sustenhorn lies on the border between Uri and Bern. The mountain features an impressively rugged glacier, and the summit offers a magnificent view all the way to the Matterhorn. We start the tour at Göscheneralp and, on the first day, enjoy the seclusion of the Chelenalp Valley together. There, we spend the night in the small, beautifully situated Chelenalp Hut. On the second day, we set off early enough to enjoy the sunrise as we climb. Together, we cross the Sustenhorn via Sustenlimi and ascend via Tierberglihütte to the Susten Pass. At the Tierberglihütte we enjoy coffee and cake, of course.
Procedure & meeting point
We’ll meet at 10.50 am at Göschenen railway station and travel on together to Göscheneralp at 11.15 am. We recommend travelling by public transport.
We make a leisurely ascent to the Chelenalp hut. We first pass the Göscheneralpsee, where a village once "drowned" in the reservoir.
Early in the morning, we set off by the light of our headlamps and enjoy the tranquillity of dawn. We climb across the moraine to the edge of the glacier, where we put on our crampons. A short, easy scramble takes us up to the Sustenlimi. The Sustenlimi is the pass leading to the Tierbergli Hut. But before we descend to the hut, we continue across the glacier to reach the summit, which offers magnificent views. The descent takes us to the Tierbergli Hut, where we enjoy coffee and cake before continuing down into the valley to the Steingletscher on the Susten Pass road. There, we’ll be picked up by a taxi and taken to Meiringen railway station.
With lots of lovely memories in our rucksacks, we round off the tour together in Meiringen.
