Schreckhorn

The Schreckhorn is the alpine queen of the Bernese Alps and is one of the most striking and challenging four-thousand-metre peaks in the Alps. Slender, steep and with an impressive presence, the mountain towers over Grindelwald. Its ascent is a genuine high-alpine endeavour and is aimed at mountaineers looking for a challenging, classic ridge and firn tour.

Together with an experienced mountain guide, you climb the Schreckhorn via the classic route from the Schreckhornhütte. The tour requires surefootedness, stamina and concentration and rewards you with a fantastic summit experience and a view that stretches from the Finsteraarhorn far into the Valais Alps.

The ascent leads over firn fields, rock steps and exposed ridge passages. The summit ridge in particular requires clean walking, steady climbing in easy to medium difficulty (up to 4th degree) and a stable rope team. The route is technically varied and offers a real high mountain feeling far away from the easy normal routes.

The Schreckhornhütte serves as our base. Its secluded location in the middle of high alpine terrain makes the tour an intense experience - far away from the hustle and bustle, very close to the mountain.

  • Procedure and meeting place

    • Meeting place

      Grindelwald

Your mountain guide will meet you either in Grindelwald or at the Schreckhornhütte, where we will spend the night before and after the summit ascent due to the length of the tour.

    • Day 1 - Approach to the Schreckhornhütte

We meet in the morning in Grindelwaldtal and set off together towards the Schreckhornhütte. The path leads us steadily higher up into the alpine terrain. We quickly gain altitude over moraines, scree and the first snowfields and gradually immerse ourselves in the high alpine world.

The approach is challenging but well laid out and gives us time to get to know each other and find our pace for the coming days. Once we arrive at the Schreckhornhütte, we set up camp, enjoy a warm dinner and discuss the summit day together. It's time to go to bed early - the next day starts early.

    • Day 2 - Summit day Schreckhorn

We set off before daybreak. Wearing head torches, we climb higher over firn fields and glacier passages until the more challenging part of the tour begins. The ascent leads over a combination of firn, rock and exposed ridge passages. Concentration, clean climbing and efficient rope teamwork are required.

We finally reach the summit of the Schreckhorn via the striking summit ridge. A magnificent panorama of the Bernese Oberland awaits us at the top, with views of the Finsteraarhorn, Lauteraarhorn and the surrounding glacier landscapes.

After a short rest at the summit, we carefully descend along the same route back to the Schreckhornhütte. There we round off the intensive day with a well-earned meal and a cool drink.

    • Day 3 - Descent into the valley

After breakfast, we either make our way back to the valley together or you make your own way back. This depends on whether the mountain guide accompanies another guest to the Schreckhorn the following day. The descent again leads through high alpine terrain, which now presents itself from a different perspective. With every metre of ascent, the landscape becomes greener again, the air warmer and everyday life slowly draws closer.

Once we arrive in the valley, we say goodbye - full of a challenging, intensive and impressive high tour to one of the most beautiful four-thousand-metre peaks in the Alps.
