Susten Pass
The Susten Pass – and therefore the Sustenlochspitz as well – is easily accessible and offers a magnificent high-altitude hike on superb gneiss right by the Susten Pass. Along the way, we always enjoy the magnificent views of the vast glaciers of the Sustenhorn and the jagged peaks of the Susten region. The route starts from the Susten Pass and follows the footpath to the start of the climb. From there, the route leads over several ridges and crags to the summit, which offers spectacular views. Along the way, we’ll be climbing and scrambling – sometimes along the ridge, sometimes up the slope – always on superb rock with magnificent views. The descent is varied, with two short abseil sections. Back at the Susten Pass, we can look back with delight on our tour together and raise a toast!
Procedure and meeting place
We’ll meet directly at the Susten Pass. For anyone interested in carpooling, meet at Altdorf station at 07:51.
The approach from the Susten Pass takes about 1 hour to reach the Guferjoch, from where we begin the traverse. This leads over several towers and exposed ridges to the summit. The climbing is often Grade III and takes around 4 hours. The descent involves two short abseil sections, where the mountain guide will lower you down.
We’ll round off the tour together with a lovely experience back at the Susten Pass.
Requirements
- First experience of high-altitude mountaineering and scrambling at difficulty level III
- Walking in pathless terrain
- Fitness required for an ascent and descent of around 800 metres, with a few sections requiring climbing; total walking time around 8 hours.

- Rope team with 2 guests per mountain guide.

Bergschaft tours and courses are conducted in German as standard. However, our mountain guides speak good English, as do many of the participants. If you speak English, you are of course very welcome. Depending on the tour, it may be worth asking us in advance whether the guide and the group are comfortable speaking English.
