The Pfriendler is a striking rocky peak above the Susten Pass on the Steingletscher side. Among climbers, it is primarily known as a versatile multi-pitch area. It offers ideal conditions for honing your multi-pitch climbing skills and gaining greater confidence for your own routes. The grippy Erstfeld gneiss, the well-secured routes and the alpine surroundings with fantastic views of the Tierbergli Glacier make the area an ideal place for both adventure and learning. Together we’ll spend the day on the rock, focusing on the key aspects of multi-pitch climbing: belay station setup, rope management, communication within the rope team, efficient procedures and the right route tactics. The focus is not simply on climbing, but on moving safely and independently on multi-pitch routes. The coaching is aimed at climbers who already have some experience in multi-pitch climbing and wish to refresh and deepen their existing knowledge. We put the content into practice directly on the rock and benefit from the wide range of opportunities offered by the Pfriendler.
Procedure and meeting place
We will meet at 9.00 am at the summit of the Susten Pass. Depending on how participants are travelling, there is the option to carpool from Altdorf station at 8.00 am to the Susten Pass.
We’ll climb up to the Pfriendler in about 45 minutes. At the start of the route, we’ll go over the key basics of multi-pitch climbing and focus on setting belay stations, rope management and communication within the rope team. We then start the route and put what we’ve learnt into practice on the rock. Whilst climbing, we refine our techniques, discuss route tactics and practise working efficiently at belay stations. The climb covers several pitches through grippy gneiss and offers ideal opportunities to deepen your understanding of the various aspects of multi-pitch climbing in a practical setting. There will be plenty of time for individual input, questions and repetition. After finishing the climb, we enjoy the view of the Tierbergli Glacier and reflect on the key learning points before returning to the starting point.
We’ll finish the tour together back at the Susten Pass.
Requirements
- You have already gained some experience on multi-pitch routes and are familiar with the following rope-handling techniques:
- Stand construction
- Securing with ATC, Tuber etc.
- Abseiling technique
- Communication as a rope team on an MSL route
- We climb at grades 4b to 5a. The focus is on refreshing our knowledge and practising and repeating techniques.
- Suitable for climbing routes with a leisurely approach and descent of around 45 minutes.
- You have already gained some experience on multi-pitch routes and are familiar with the following rope-handling techniques:

- Including professional planning and realisation with a mountain guide and his travel expenses.

Material and equipment
- For this tour you need the material from this PDF. We carry our equipment with us the whole time. Only pack the essentials.
Bergschaft tours and courses are conducted in German as standard. However, our mountain guides speak good English, as do many of the participants. If you speak English, you are of course very welcome. Depending on the tour, it may be worth asking us in advance whether the guide and the group are comfortable speaking English.
