Would you like to discover the wonderful world of mountaineering? To traverse vast glaciers together, reach mountain summits with stunning views, enjoy the morning atmosphere in the mountains and experience a little adventure with fellow mountain enthusiasts? This introductory high-altitude tour offers the perfect introduction to high-altitude mountaineering. On the first day, we’ll focus on the basic techniques, tips and tricks for rock climbing and scrambling. On the second day, we’ll head onto the glacier: You’ll learn how to walk with crampons, practise key basics and marvel at the impressive glacial phenomena. The crowning glory is our joint ascent of the Gemsfairenstock – with stunning views and the experience of your first high-altitude tour under your belt.

  • Course content and procedure

    • Meeting point and welcome

      09:00 Urnerboden, Fisetengrat cable car car park

      We’ll meet at Urnerboden, right next to the Fisetenbahn, once we’ve got off the bus. There are plenty of parking spaces here too. After a brief welcome from the mountain guide, we’ll set off together for the first day of training.

    • Day 1 - Approach to the hut and training

      We’ll get off to a leisurely start, taking the cable car up to the Fisetengrat and hiking to the idyllically situated Clariden Hut. We’ll begin the course by explaining the exact itinerary and going through the course content. On the first day, we’ll learn the basics of high-altitude mountaineering near the hut. Around the hut, we’ll find perfect rocks and practice areas to practise using the rope.

      Daily destination: You’ll learn the basics of mountaineering and gain your first experiences. You’ll learn techniques that will keep you safe on your climbs.

      Course content: 

      • Climbing with mountain boots and crampons
      • Handling crampons and ice axe
      • Pimple brake
      • Abseiling

    • Day 2 - Learning and applying

      During the practical excursion to the Gemsfairenstock, we’ll revise what we learnt the day before and learn some new things as well.

      Daily destination: You build on what you have learnt and become more confident in its application. You will gain a clear impression of what alpine tours are and what you need for alpine touring.

      • Walking with ice axe and crampons on the glacier
      • Rope types
      • Summit happiness
    • Conclusion

      around 3.00 pm, Urner Boden

      Back on Uri soil, we complete the course together and set off on our journey home, armed with new knowledge and our first memories of high-altitude mountaineering in our rucksacks.

  • Requirements

    • No previous experience is necessary.
    • Experience in hiking and walking in pathless terrain is an advantage.
    • Stamina for alpine tours with around 800 metres ascent and descent at a leisurely pace (~300m/h)
  • Price and services

    • CHF 575.-
    • Small group with 4 - 6 guests per mountain guide.
    • Including planning and realisation with mountain guide and his travel expenses.
    • Including overnight stay in a hut with half board
    • Excluding travel expenses, possible train tickets, personal consumption.
  • Material and equipment

Bergschaft tours and courses are conducted in German as standard. However, our mountain guides speak good English, as do many of the participants. If you speak English, you are of course very welcome. Depending on the tour, it may be worth asking us in advance whether the guide and the group are comfortable speaking English.
