A fantastic introductory high-altitude hike in the Surselva: across the Medelser Glacier and along a short summit ridge to Piz Medel.

Piz Medel towers above the Greina plain and is a solitary and magnificent high tour near Disentis in the Surselva. Thanks to the Alpine taxi, the ascent is comfortable and cosy. On the first day we enjoy the beautiful Greina plain, a high plateau where the rivers still meander beautifully and nature is unspoilt. At the cosy Terri hut, we have time to arrive and scramble on the surrounding rocks in preparation for the summit day. But be careful: the legendary cake on the hut terrace and the panoramic window with a view of Piz Medel could almost put you off practising! We set off early on the second day. The ascent to Piz Medel is varied over a wide glacier, the terrain remains technically easy and offers an intense high mountain experience. At the end, a short, easy ridge awaits us before we reach the summit. The descent leads over the glacier back to Val Plattas. If you like, you can finish with a refreshing dip in the mountain stream before the Alpine taxi takes us back down to the valley. A great, easy high-altitude tour - ideal for enjoying nature, the glacier world and alpine tranquillity together.
Procedure and meeting place
We’ll meet in Disentis at 10.15 am, timed to coincide with the train service. From there, we’ll take the Alpentaxi together to Pardatsch in Val Plattas.
Leisurely hut approach to the Camona da Medel. Short input on the crampons, some climbing and scrambling around the hut if desired. Otherwise we enjoy perfect cake with a magnificent view from the Medelserhütte.
By the light of our headlamps, we set off into the sunrise. After an hour, we reach the glacier and put on our crampons and ice axes. Crossing the impressive da Medel glacier, we reach the secondary summit of Piz Medel and, via its short ridge, the main summit. The descent takes us straight back down the glacier and back into Val Plattas, from where we take a taxi back to Disentis.
After the descent, we’ll be picked up by a taxi in Pardatsch again and taken to Disentis railway station. With our bags full of wonderful memories, we’ll each set off on our own way home.
Requirements
- Little prior knowledge is required.
- Experience in hiking and walking in pathless terrain.
- First experience with crampons.
- Stamina for alpine tours with around 800 metres ascent and 1500 metres descent at a leisurely pace (~300m/h).

Bergschaft tours and courses are conducted in German as standard. However, our mountain guides speak good English, as do many of the participants. If you speak English, you are of course very welcome. Depending on the tour, it may be worth asking us in advance whether the guide and the group are comfortable speaking English.

The Medelserhütte is idyllically situated on the pass in front of Piz Medel. It serves as the gateway to the beautiful Greina plain. The Medelserhütte is lovingly run by Verena and Jochen and the view from the panorama window is unique. Here you feel at home!
