A fascinating world of ski touring lies hidden around Sterzing: from the classic peaks of the Stubai and Zillertal Alps to quiet side valleys, snow-covered alpine pastures and panoramic peaks overlooking the Wipptal. For a whole week, we’ll explore this diversity on our skis. We’ll seek out the finest conditions, the best descents and unique experiences in the four side valleys around Sterzing, whilst benefiting from the locals’ knowledge. After all, Sandra from our office grew up here and knows the region inside out. It was here, amongst these mountains and valleys, that her own passion for exploring nature began. We’ll make our way through snow-covered forests and open slopes, cross high-alpine landscapes and repeatedly enjoy the views of South Tyrol’s impressive mountain scenery. What makes this week special is that, thanks to our centrally located accommodation, we remain flexible and can reach the starting points of our tours within around 20 minutes, depending on the weather, snow and avalanche conditions. This means we can choose exactly which mountains and valleys offer the best conditions on any given day. The ascents are undertaken without the use of lifts and take us far away from mass tourism. There’s plenty to discover beyond the ski tours too: fine South Tyrolean cuisine, cosy evenings and, in Sterzing, a beautiful little town that invites you to relax and stroll around.
Procedure and meeting place
We’ll meet up in Switzerland and travel together in car-shares via Innsbruck and the Brenner Pass to South Tyrol. The journey takes a leisurely 4 hours. We’ll arrive at our hotel, get to know one another and enjoy our first dinner together. We’ll get in the mood for the days ahead together.
After breakfast, we set off together on our daily ski tours. We decide flexibly which tour to take and also chat to the locals to find out: where is the best snow at the moment? Which slopes are particularly beautiful at the moment? And which valley is worth visiting today? Over the course of the week, we’ll discover a wide variety of valleys around Sterzing (Ratschings, Ridnaun, the Jaufental, Pflersch and Pfitschtal) and experience the region’s peaceful, unspoilt sides in the process. Many a valley surprises us with its idyllic and cosy atmosphere, far away from the hustle and bustle. Depending on the tour, we’ll stop for a bite to eat after the descent. We’ll round off our ski tour at a mountain hut serving food and drink or a cosy pub – just as the locals do. Back at our accommodation, you can choose to spend the afternoon in the sauna or the pool, or explore the little town of Sterzing and enjoy an afternoon aperitif.
Today we’re saying goodbye to our accommodation and going on a short ski tour to round off our trip. Once again, we’ll enjoy the wintry mountain scenery and reflect on the past few days before setting off back to Switzerland. With lots of new impressions, wonderful experiences and, hopefully, a few insider tips under our belts, we’ll begin our journey home.
Requirements
- Mastering the ski touring technique with its basics (skins, hairpin turns).
- Safe downhill technique in open terrain and in different types of snow.
- Fitness level required for ski tours covering around 1,000–1,200 metres of elevation gain at a leisurely pace (~350 metres of elevation gain per hour). Some tours are a little longer, others a little shorter. We plan the tours so that we spread our energy out evenly over the week.
- Splitboarders (provided they are experienced) are welcome.

Bergschaft tours and courses are conducted in German as standard. However, our mountain guides speak good English, as do many of the participants. If you speak English, you are of course very welcome. Depending on the tour, it may be worth asking us in advance whether the guide and the group are comfortable speaking English.

Hotel Anett
The Anett is a stylish boutique hotel in Gasteig near Sterzing and offers the perfect base for our ski tours around the Wipptal valley. After a day in the mountains, cosy rooms, a fine restaurant and the small but excellent spa area with a pool and three saunas await. This allows us to round off our days on the slopes in a relaxed manner whilst enjoying South Tyrolean hospitality.
