Just above the fog on a ski tour in the Gauli area

Grimsel, Bern

The Gauli region is a true jewel of the Bernese Alps - secluded, wild and characterised by impressive high mountain scenery. This four-day ski tour offers everything that makes the heart of ski touring fans beat faster: imposing glaciers, lonely peaks, exciting crossings and great descents. The passage over the Obere Bächlilücke with its ladders and chains provides a sense of alpine adventure - here you can feel the character of this tour: varied, challenging and with plenty of high mountain atmosphere. In the heart of the Gauli region, wide, unspoilt glacier areas and quiet summit destinations await us, which we can choose according to the conditions and the group. The crowning finale is the long descent over the Rosenlaui glacier - one of the most beautiful and impressive descents in the Alps. It leads over 2000 metres in altitude through a wild glacier landscape down to the historic Rosenlaui valley - a downhill experience you won't soon forget.

The tour is technically feasible, but requires a solid level of fitness, safe off-piste skiing and experience with crampons. If you are looking for alpine adventure, magnificent scenery and genuine ski touring tranquillity, you will find an unforgettable experience here in the middle of the wild Bernese Alps. A tour for all those who love alpine diversity and want to experience the thrill of solitary ski tours up close.

      6 hours

From Räterichsboden, we start the ascent to the Bächlitalhütte on our touring skis. As the ascent doesn't take a whole day, we choose a nice slope for our first turns in the snow and end the day in a cosy atmosphere at the hut.

    • Day 2 - Over the Bächlilücke and descent to the Gaulihütte

      1000 Hm

      6-8 hours

A particularly impressive section of the tour awaits us on this day - the crossing over the Obere Bächlilücke. We set off early in the morning and enjoy the quiet ascent over the Bächligletscher, while the first rays of sunlight bathe the surrounding peaks in warm light. The crossing itself is a real alpine experience: we climb up several ladders and secured passages before descending safely with chains and crampons to the Hiendertelti glacier on the other side. From here, the marvellous descent to the Gaulihütte begins, which, with its charm and impressive location, is the perfect place to end the day in a relaxed manner. A varied day of touring full of alpine impressions that once again shows just how varied and fascinating the Bernese Alps are.

    • Day 3 - Ski tour in the Gauli area

      1200-1400 metres altitude

      1200-1400 metres altitude

      WS

      6-8 hours

From the Gaulihütte, we embark on an exciting day of touring with a return to the hut - so we can leave unnecessary weight behind and optimise our strength. There is a wide choice of rewarding destinations around the hut, and we choose the right tour depending on the conditions, weather and group. Here, in the middle of the impressive basin of snow and rock, numerous possibilities await: impressive ascents over extensive glaciers, lonely peaks with magnificent views and varied downhill variants that leave nothing to be desired. Two nights in the Gaulihütte give us the freedom to organise the tours flexibly and to fully enjoy the best snow conditions - true to the motto: easy on the way, intensive experience.

    • Day 4 - Ski tour and descent into the Rosenlaui valley

      1000-1400 metres altitude

      1900-2300 metres altitude

      L to WS+

      6-8 hours

A crowning finale to our ski touring days awaits us on the last day. We leave the Gauli area via the western Wätterlimi, the Ränfenhorn or the Rosenhorn - depending on the conditions and the group. From there, the route leads us over the mighty Rosenlaui glacier down into the valley of the same name. This final tour is a real highlight: a long, varied descent, often on wonderfully powdery snow as we are north-facing and with impressive views of the steep flanks of the Engelhörner. We cover around 2300 metres in altitude - a descent that is one of the best in the Alps!

Down in the historic Rosenlaui valley, we treat ourselves to a well-earned refreshment at the Hotel Rosenlaui before the taxi takes us comfortably back to Meiringen. A worthy end to a tour full of alpine highlights, impressive landscapes and unforgettable moments.

    • Conclusion
