The Finsteraarhorn is the highest peak in the Bernese Alps and combines everything that characterises classic ski mountaineering: large glaciers, an elegant summit structure, easy scrambling, impressive scenery and long descents. How difficult is the ski tour to the Finsteraarhorn?

The tour to the Finsteraarhorn is a challenging high-altitude ski tour and is aimed at experienced ski tourers in good physical condition. Technically, the tour is not extremely difficult, but the long ascents, the altitude and the exposed summit ridge require surefootedness and safe behaviour/experience in alpine terrain.

What level of fitness does this tour require?

You will be able to climb around 1200-1500 metres in altitude for several days in a row. A good basic level of fitness is crucial so that you can enjoy the tour and have sufficient reserves.

Is experience on glaciers necessary?

Yes, initial experience in high alpine terrain and on glaciers is an advantage. During the tour we will be travelling on glaciated terrain. We use crampons and ice axes for some ascents and approaches.

What does the summit ascent look like?

The summit is usually reached on foot via a narrow firn and rocky ridge. This section is exposed, but technically feasible for experienced mountaineers.

Which descents can be expected?

The Finsteraarhorn offers impressive descents across wide glaciers. In good conditions, long turns await us in high alpine surroundings with a unique backdrop.

Which approach will be used and at which hut will you spend the night?

We use the Jungfraujochbahn from Grindelwald Terminal to get to the Jungfrau. From there we start over the Grünhornlücke to the Finsteraarhornhütte, where we spend the next two nights. The modern SAC hut is spectacularly situated in the middle of the high alpine glacier world and offers an impressive atmosphere.
