Bernese Haute Route Grande

Our adventure begins spectacularly on the Jungfraujoch, where we plunge directly into the high alpine glacier world. Via the mighty Konkordiaplatz we reach the Finsteraarhornhütte, right in the heart of the Bernese Alps. In the days that follow, we move from hut to hut and experience a ski crossing with character: wild, impressive and full of alpine experiences. The Bernese Haute Route Grande leads us into the mighty world of ice and rock between Jungfrau, Finsteraarhorn and Lauteraarhorn. Along the way, we reach increasingly isolated touring areas, such as the Lauteraarhütte, which is very remote in winter.

Technically, the tour requires safe walking with crampons, good skiing technique and a solid level of fitness. In return, it offers unforgettable views, mighty glaciers, exciting crossings, rewarding summits, cosy hut evenings and great descents. A tour for all those who are looking for adventure and want to experience the wild beauty of the Bernese Alps up close.

  • Procedure and meeting place

    • Meeting place

      09.45 a.m., Jungfraujoch

We meet on the Jungfraujoch, right by the first coffee bar after arriving from the train. After being greeted by the mountain guide, we start our tour together.

    • Day 1 - Departure KonKordiaplatz & ascent Finsteraarhornhütte

      700 Hm

      1200 metres altitude

      WS

Our adventure gets off to a spectacular start: we meet at the Jungfraujoch (3454 m) and immediately immerse ourselves in the fascinating world of the Bernese Alps. From here we glide over the imposing Aletsch Glacier to the Concordiaplatz (2700 m), a huge ice arena surrounded by some of the largest glacier streams in the Alps. We then ascend via the Grünhornlücke (3280 m) before a short descent and a small ascent in the opposite direction lead us to the cosy Finsteraarhornhütte (3048 m), our first stage destination amidst the magnificent mountain scenery.

This stage offers a perfect introduction to the tour: technically easy, but impressive and challenging due to the length of the glacier passages. On the way, we enjoy impressive views of the Finsteraarhorn, the mighty Aletsch Glacier and the surrounding peaks.

    • Day 2 - Over the Gemschlicke to the Oberaarjochhütte

      700 Hm

      500 Hm

      S

On the second day, we start with a short descent across the glacier before we strap on our skis and ascend with crampons over the Gemschlicke (approx. 3300 m). The crossing is technically easy, but requires safe walking in firn and some alpine experience. After the crossing, we glide over wide glacier surfaces towards the Oberaarjochhütte (3258 m), which sits spectacularly enthroned between rock and ice and welcomes us with its unique view over the Oberaar Glacier.

If you still have strength and desire, you can climb the Oberaarhorn (3629 m) in the afternoon, a rewarding, technically easy summit with magnificent panoramic views over the Bernese and Valais Alps.

    • Day 3 - Over the Scheuchzerhorn to the Lauteraarhütte

      1000 Hm

      1900 metres altitude

      ZS-

On the third day, we cross the Oberaarjoch (3212 m) and enjoy the impressive view of the mighty ice masses of the Oberaar and Unteraar glaciers. We then climb the Scheuchzerhorn (3456 m), a quiet summit that is rarely visited but rewards us with a magnificent panorama of the Finsteraarhorn, the Lauteraargrat and the Haslital. The subsequent descent over the Scheuchzerjoch (approx. 3200 m) to the Unteraar Glacier is a scenic highlight: wide, mostly untracked slopes, framed by wild rock and ice landscapes. Once we reach the bottom of the glacier, a short ascent via the via ferrata with ladders leads us up to the cosy Lauteraarhütte (2393 m), an impressive place with fantastic views of the surrounding peaks and the mighty glacier stream. Here we enjoy the evening in a cosy atmosphere.

    • Day 4 - Over the Joche to Räterichsbodensee

      1000 Hm

      1700 metres altitude

      WS+

Finally, a real highlight awaits us: from the Lauteraar area, we climb up to the Hiendertelltijoch (3178 m), an impressive transition between wild rock faces and the extensive glacier basin. We master the last part of the ascent with crampons before we abseil down around 20-25 metres at the pass, an exciting passage that conveys real alpine flair. This is followed by the counter ascent to the upper Bächlitallücke (approx. 3070 m), which is secured with a via ferrata and forms the last technical section of this crossing. The terrain then opens up and we enjoy a gigantic descent over extensive firn slopes down to Räterichsbodensee (1767 m), a crowning finale after four intensive days in the heart of the Bernese Alps. The taxi awaits us at the bottom to take us comfortably back to Meiringen.

    • Conclusion

      approx. 16.00 hrs Meiringen

We end the tour together in a cosy café in Meiringen before setting off on our journey home.
