Mönch with a mountain guide | Day hike to a four-thousander
A spontaneous day trip to a four-thousander: the Mönch offers stunning glacial landscapes and a magnificent ridge of rock and ice for a varied ascent to the summit.
We’re setting off on a spontaneous day trip to one of the most famous four-thousand-metre peaks in the Bernese Alps. Thanks to the Jungfrau cable car, we’ll reach the heart of the high-alpine world of ice, firn and rock in comfort. From there, we’ll ascend towards the summit via the Mönchsfirn. The route offers varied firn sections, easy climbing and an exposed summit ridge – everything that makes for a classic high-altitude tour. The Mönch is ideal as a first four-thousander on a mountain guide’s rope and impressively conveys the fascination of the high mountains. At the summit, we’ll be rewarded with a magnificent panoramic view over the Bernese Oberland, the Valais and the imposing mountain world surrounding the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. A perfect opportunity to get a taste of the high-alpine atmosphere on the spur of the moment and to climb one of the most beautiful classic routes in the Swiss Alps.
Procedure and meeting place
We’ll meet directly at the Jungfraujoch once the train arrives. If you’d like, you can also travel to the Jungfraujoch the day before and stay overnight at the Möchsjochhütte. The mountain guides will already be there and will be happy to pick you up.
Immediately upon arrival at the Jungfraujoch, we are plunged straight into the high-alpine world of ice, firn and rock. We ascend across the Mönchsfirn towards the Mönchsjoch. From there, the route takes us steadily higher towards the summit. We steadily gain altitude over firn passages, easy climbing sections and exposed ridge sections. The mountain guide accompanies and belays the participants through the exposed sections. After reaching the summit at 4,107 m, we enjoy the impressive views of the Bernese Alps, the Aletsch region and the surrounding four-thousand-metre peaks. After a rest at the summit, we descend along the ascent route back to the Jungfraujoch.
We finish the tour together again in Grindelwald.
