The Simplon Pass is a true paradise for ski tourers! Thanks to its high altitude and the well-developed pass road, there are countless possibilities and exciting combinations. Directly from the top of the pass, you can embark on fantastic tours to the Tochuhorn or Spitzhorli - if there is enough snow, you can ski down a lot with just a short ascent!
The north-facing routes towards Breithorn or Mäderlücke are also particularly rewarding: shady slopes that often keep the powder snow fresh and fluffy for days - a real highlight for connoisseurs. When fresh snow falls or the weather doesn't play ball, the tours around the hotel are perfect. The sparse forests ensure good visibility and, with the help of the small ski lift, you can experience great descents with minimal ascent.
The region around the Simplon Pass is incredibly diverse – ranging from leisurely to challenging, from sun-drenched peaks to snow-covered north-facing slopes. And after an action-packed day in the snowy winter wonderland, the charming Hotel Wasenalp awaits with warm hospitality and a very special highlight: the outdoor hot tub and ice baths – the perfect place to wind down at the end of the day and recharge your batteries.
Procedure and meeting place
We’ll meet at 8.48 am at the Rothwald bus stop, by the shelter. From Zurich, you can travel there easily by public transport or by joining an organised carpool.
Once we’ve got to know each other and left our luggage at the hotel, we’ll get ready for our first ski tour. Tailoring the route to the group’s ability, we’ll choose a gentle ascent and look for the best snow for the descent. We spend our evenings at the mountain inn, where we treat ourselves to some fine dining or recharge our batteries in the outdoor ice bath or hot tub.
Depending on the conditions, we go on lovely ski tours. We choose the best conditions and enjoy leisurely ascents and fantastic descents.
We’ll round off these ski touring days together on Sunday afternoon. Everyone will make their own way home.
Requirements
- Mastering the ski touring technique with its basics (skins, hairpin turns).
- Safe downhill technique in open terrain and in different types of snow.
- Stamina for ski tours of around 800-1000 metres at a leisurely pace (~300m/h).
- Condition for 1000m of descent in different types of snow.
- Splitboarders are welcome.
Price and services
- CHF 945.-
- Small group with 4 - 7 guests per mountain guide.
- Includes accommodation in a spacious and comfortable shared room. Accommodation in a twin room is available for an additional charge of CHF 45 for two people; a single room is available for an additional charge of CHF 65.
- Half board included.
- Including planning and realisation with mountain guide and his travel expenses.
- Excluding travel expenses, possible train tickets, personal consumption.
Material and equipment
- We have for you a detailed packing list with packing tips compiled.
- For this tour you need the following material from this PDF. After the meeting point, we will deposit our luggage at the hotel and set off on our first leisurely ski tour.
- The Wasenalp is a remote hotel. Pack so that we can comfortably carry a small extra bag for about 30 minutes along a snow-covered road to the hotel. We’ll leave the bag there and then set off on our tour straight away.
Bergschaft tours and courses are conducted in German as standard. However, our mountain guides speak good English, as do many of the participants. If you speak English, you are of course very welcome. Depending on the tour, it may be worth asking us in advance whether the guide and the group are comfortable speaking English.

Hotel Wasenalp
Located right next to the small Rothwald ski lift, this beautiful hotel offers the best cuisine, warm hospitality and relaxation in the outdoor whirlpool in the evening. Thanks to its location, you can start various tours from here. The sunset on the terrace is also magnificent! We stay in comfortable double rooms.
