Ski touring and avalanches | Gemmi basic course with application tours with a mountain guide

  • Meeting place

    10:15 am, Leukerbad bus terminal

    We’ll meet in Leukerbad and take the cable car up to the Gemmi Pass. We’ll get to know each other and discuss your expectations.

  • Day 1 – Introductory hike to the Lämmeren Hut

    After the cable car ride, we’ll explain all the basics of ski touring as well as how to use the safety equipment. We’ll then set off on our ascent to the hut on skis. During the ascent, we’ll incorporate brief explanations at regular intervals. On the first day, we’ll learn a lot of new things in a practical, hands-on way. We’ll take the time to deliberately go over the topics several times over the coming days to ensure everyone feels confident.

  • Days 2 & 3 – Learning and putting it into practice

    During varied ski touring excursions, we’ll revise what we learnt on the first day and pick up new skills. This will help you feel confident when ascending on touring skis and make your movements second nature.

    In the evenings, back at the hut, we’ll explore topics such as route planning, the weather and avalanche awareness. Together, we’ll plan each day’s tour. This will give you your first experience of the decision-making processes required for ski touring.

  • Day 4 - Final tour

    During a final tour, we’ll once again focus on your needs and provide you with personalised support to help you gain more confidence and knowledge.

  • Training content

    Over the course of the four days, you will learn:

    Ski touring technique:

    • Putting on the skins, walking techniques and kick turns
    • Equipment: what do we need and how do we pack?
    • Skiing technique: Tips and tricks (To improve your skiing technique, we recommend our Ski technique courses.)

    Avalanche awareness:

    • Searching for avalanche victims: avalanche transceiver, probe, shovel
    • Assessment of the terrain: steepness and avalanche risk
    • Avalanche awareness, avalanche bulletin and risk check

    Itinerary planning:

    • Meteorological Theory: Tools and Apps
    • Orientation: map reading, compass, altimeter

    Reflection:

    • Where do we stand, and what happens next?
    • Expectations and feedback

    After this course, you’ll be well prepared to undertake easy ski tours independently and to join guided ski tours of easy to moderate difficulty.

  • Conclusion

    around 3.00 pm, Leukerbad cable car

    Back in the valley, we’ll round off the course together. You’ll head home with a sense of joy and a wealth of valuable experiences under your belt.

• Requirements

  • No previous ski touring experience required.
  • You know how to ski on black pistes.
  • Fitness level suitable for short ski tours involving an ascent of around 800hm at a leisurely pace (~300hm/h).
  • Splitboarders are welcome.

  • Small group with 4 - 8 guests per mountain guide.
  • Including professional planning and realisation with a mountain guide and his travel expenses.
  • Including accommodation costs and half board.
  • Travel costs not included, any train tickets, and personal expenses.
