Mountain hike to Chli & Gross Simelistock | Traverse with a mountain guide
The traverse of the Chli and Gross Simelistock is one of the most beautiful alpine scrambling routes in the Engelhörner range.

High above the Haslital valley, the traverse of the Chli and Gross Simelistock offers an impressive alpine scrambling route through the wild Engelhörner. Even on the approach to the Engelhorn Hut, the striking rock towers command everyone’s attention. It’s hard to believe that such an enjoyable route winds its way through these rugged peaks. We climb the varied route up the Chli Simelistock over grippy limestone and then cross the exposed ridge to the Gross Simelistock. The climbing is mostly of easy to moderate difficulty and offers spectacular views down into the valley as well as fantastic vistas of the surrounding peaks. Despite the moderate difficulty, the tour is a genuine alpine adventure. Navigating the route requires attention, and the descent via the Simelisattel also demands concentration. Anyone who appreciates unspoilt mountain landscapes, secluded ridges and classic alpine climbing will find one of the most beautiful tours in the Engelhörner range here.
Procedure and meeting place
We’ll meet at Meiringen railway station. From there, we’ll carpool to Alp Gross Rychenbach.
Following the approach path to the Engelhorn Hut, we reach the start of the route in around 1½ to 2 hours. This is followed by varied climbing up to the Chli Simelistock, before we cross the exposed connecting ridge. The final two pitches up to the Gross Simelistock form the crowning glory of the climb. In total, we spend around 3½ hours on the route. After a well-deserved break at the summit, we abseil down and descend via the Simelisattel into the Ochsental. From there, the path leads us back to the car park, which we reach after a further two hours or so. The route can be climbed comfortably in mountaineering boots. The crux pitches can be made easier with slings.
We’ll finish the tour together back at Meiringen railway station.
