Climbing holidays Calanques | Rock & Sea
Climbing directly above the sea, in the warmth of the south - experience it together and “savoir-vivre” enjoy: Calanques climbing holiday!
Highlights
The Calanques offer incredibly beautiful rock formations: Limestone walls rise directly out of the sea and are characterised by numerous handholds, holes and passages. You can wind your way through the rock, enjoy the view of the sea and at the same time feel the warmth of the south of France in autumn. At all levels of difficulty, we can climb directly from the sea to the rock - and then jump into the warm water! What more could you want?
Climbing trip
Thanks to the TGV, the Calanques are easily accessible by train from Switzerland. With just one change, you can be in Marseille in around seven hours. On site, we are travelling in a van and are therefore very flexible. Every day we visit a new, impressive climbing area. Wonderful multi-pitch routes await us right by the sea - with traverses, holes and an impressive landscape. We spend the night in the charming coastal town of Cassis, right by the sea. Our accommodation is a cosy maisonette with double rooms, a beautiful garden and a terrace where we can enjoy the peace and quiet. The harbour and the cultural life of the town are just a few minutes' walk away. In the evening, we can eat out in various restaurants or organise a small barbecue in the garden, just as the mood takes us.

FAQ Climbing holidays Calanques
What level of climber is the trip to the Calanques suitable for?
The Calanques offer an impressive variety of rock formations with holes, ledges and sinks. Ideally, we are in the 4c to 6a range. You should be able to lead climb and belay safely and have some experience of multi-pitch climbing and abseiling. Our IVBV mountain guides will coach you individually so that you can perfect your technique in the French limestone.
How does travelling by train work?
We focus on sustainability and comfort: thanks to the TGV, we will be travelling together from Basel (or Zurich) to Marseille in just 7 hours. We only have to change trains once in Mulhouse. Once we arrive in Marseille, we will pick up our hire car (van), which we will use to get to the various climbing sectors flexibly throughout the week.
Where do we stay during the climbing week?
Our base camp is a charming maisonette in the heart of Cassis, just a few minutes' walk from the picturesque harbour. The accommodation has double rooms, a lovely garden and a terrace - perfect for enjoying the peace and quiet after climbing. The central location gives us the flexibility to decide in the evening whether to eat in one of the many restaurants in Cassis or enjoy a cosy barbecue in the garden.
Why are spring and autumn the best times to visit the Calanques?
The climate in the Calanques is Mediterranean. In spring, the landscape is in bloom and in autumn the sea is still warm enough for a dip in the water after climbing. In addition, the temperatures during these months are ideal for rock climbing, whereas it would often be too hot on the climbing walls in midsummer.
What makes climbing right by the sea in the Calanques so special?
It's the ultimate “savoir-vivre” feeling: white limestone walls rising directly out of the azure blue water. We explore a new area every day, often with multi-pitch routes that start directly above the sea. The combination of technical climbing, the sound of the waves and the wild nature of the national park is unique in the world.
What services are included in the Bergschaft package?
The price of CHF 1990 includes
-
Guiding and coaching by professional mountain guides.
-
Accommodation in a maisonette in Cassis (double room).
-
Breakfast and catering, which we prepare in the accommodation.
-
All local journeys by hire car (van) from/to Marseille.
-
Exclusive are the TGV tickets to Marseille and restaurant visits.
-
How challenging are the approaches to the rocks?
The Calanques are a protected national park. The approaches to the most beautiful bays and cliffs lead along hiking trails and usually take between 20 and 45 minutes. A solid basic level of fitness is therefore important for these hikes on uneven terrain, but you will always be rewarded with spectacular views.
