Questions and answers about the rock-climbing course – and how do you learn to find your way to the top without colourful plastic holds? ¿
What do I need to take a rock climbing course for beginners?
For the basic climbing course alone, it’s often enough if you can lead climb and belay safely indoors. Specific outdoor experience isn’t essential, as you’ll learn how to climb safely on rock directly on our course. When booking, simply check the exact requirements for the course in question.
What is the biggest difference between an indoor climbing centre and real rock?
There are no colour-coded routes on the rock face. You’ll need to learn to “read” the rock and decide for yourself which footholds and handholds to use. What’s more, there isn’t always a handy carabiner at the end of the route, as there is in the climbing hall – you’ll need to learn how to thread the rope safely through the belay device yourself. This is precisely one of the key elements of our basic climbing course.
Do I need to bring my own equipment to learn to climb?
To get started, all you need are your own climbing shoes, a climbing harness and a helmet. We’re happy to provide you with technical safety equipment such as ropes and quickdraws on our beginners’ courses. However, if you already have your own kit, please feel free to bring it along to the course – that way, you can practise and learn using your own equipment straight away.
Is a lead climbing course on natural rock dangerous?
Outdoor climbing requires a greater sense of personal responsibility and sound technique. However, sport climbing is very safe in Switzerland’s modern, well-secured climbing areas. Our mountain guides place the utmost importance on a gradual approach, fall training in a safe environment and dynamic belaying techniques.
Which climbing shoes are best suited to beginners?
When starting out on the rock, avoid extremely tight, heavily pre-stretched bouldering shoes. For a full day at the crag, we recommend a comfortable shoe with a slightly stiffer sole. That way, your feet won’t hurt and you’ll still have perfect grip on small rock holds.
Will the climbing course still take place even if the weather is bad?
We love climbing in the sunshine! If the weather at our planned destination is bad (e.g. rain), we’re flexible and often head to drier climbing areas instead. If climbing outdoors is absolutely impossible, we’ll work with you to find a suitable solution.
